In 1997, the residents of Mexico City for the first time elected their highest political authority, the head of government, breaking the historical tradition that had had submitted them to the federal powers. Since then the participation of the citizens in the decisions that affect local public life has grown and exceeded the usual elections, to also express themselves in neighborhood meetings, plebiscites and consultations organized by the Electoral Institute of Mexico City. However, the Mexico of the 21st century requires for its political advance, in addition to the celebration of reliable elections, a more committed participation of all citizens and the promotion of democratic culture.

In 1945 UNAM conquered its full autonomy from the federal government, after a long process that included student strikes in 1929 and 1933, as well as a tense dispute with President Lázaro Cárdenas government.

The UNAM Law School is distinguished from its competitors in a fundamental aspect: being part of a public education institution, with a broad popular representation and with a strong sense of social and national responsibility.

The constitution of the Cámara Nacional del Autotransporte de Carga (National Chamber of Cargo Transport) marked a step towards an era based on international competition and technological development.
