Five years after the dramatic events that brought Season 8 to a close, Inspector Rocher is being primed to become Commissioner. Jess has passed all her tests to become Lieutenant; she and Hyppo are now married. Meanwhile, Adèle has left Paris and quit the police force. She is about to marry the man of her dreams, when she is called to weigh in on a particularly violent and strange murder: the corpse of a woman found inside a dead bull. Adèle feels irresistibly drawn back to her criminology work - and to Rocher.

Adèe and Rocher, thrown back together on a murder case after five years apart, find themselves in mortal danger. They get locked up by criminals. Rocher is wounded. Commissioner Lamarck, Hyppo and Jess race against the clock to save them in time. In those exceptional circumstances, with tension at its peak, Adele and Rocher tell each other the things they have never been able to confess. But unfortunately, those words may be their last.

After five years of absence, Adèle Delettre returns to the police force as criminologist at Paris Crime Investigation Headquarters, 3rd division. Her return quickly spins into action when the team gets called onto an urgent new case: a woman has been abducted from a country road at night. She is the third victim in the last six months to have disappeared from the area without a trace. On their first new official investigation, Adèle and Rocher have to learn to work together once again to resolve the mystery and save those women before it's too late.

Rocher's team faces a mystery when the dead body of a man is found in a room locked from the inside. No one could have entered or left. The only witness is the victim's five-year-old granddaughter. When Adèle questions her, she makes a drawing of what she saw: a frightening tall black silhouette wearing a top hat. Is it merely the nightmare of a traumatized child, or did the murderer impersonate a terrifying boogeyman to commit the crime?

While Ulysse spends some time with Gabriel, still in Paris, Adèle teaches criminology at the University, where she notices an outstanding student, Olivia Lathis. At Institut Ertane end-of-year party, Émilie Vilani, 15, is strangled and her eyes are gouged out. The team finds that the only witness is the victim's best friend, Marion Rouillet, who received a blow to the head during the attack. Marion participates in a school program for blind students, so she cannot provide many details of the assault. All the guests at the party are suspects. Émilie sent a text to a certain "DR" before her death.

After being told by Gabriel that Rocher is hiding his illness from her, Adèle shows up at the hospital where he is to be operated in two days to tell him that she will not give up on him. Next, Adèle receives notice of a new crime and Rocher decides to go despite being on leave. The strangled body of Laurent Petit has been found in a cabin. His murderer was ruthless, destroying his face. The name "Nora" is obsessively written on the walls. When one of the floorboards gives way under Kancel's weight, the team is stunned to discover the skeleton of a stranger who had also been strangled more than ten years ago. The MO seems the same for the two corpses.

Lamarck receives a call and informs Rocher of his immediate suspension until further notice. 48 hours earlier, Rocher follows a woman, sure that she is Judith Guérin though she claims to be Isabel Baron. In his first case after the surgery, Rocher attends the murder scene of Carol Wo, 51, concierge, brutally beaten in the elevator. When the PJ discovers the floor it came from, they find some mannequins representing the Gardin family, dead a year before due to lightning, and the eldest daughter, Pauline, only survivor, in shock. She has been living since the accident with her godfather Patrick Lagache, who wants her to empty the apartment to sell it. Courtène is temporarily replacing Jess, about to give birth.

Commandant Rocher receives a phone call from Isabelle Baron, confessing she took advantage of Judith's disappearance and used her name to run away, but her past is back to terrorize her. When Thomas arrives at her home, he discovers she has fallen from the roof of her house. Convinced she has been murdered and, since he is still suspended, Rocher decides to infiltrate the seemingly normal suburban neighbourhood where Isabelle lived as a child with her parents. He meets Isabelle's mother, who tries to commit suicide, and sister Jade, who is 15 years younger. Surprisingly, Adèle decides to help him, despite Lamarck's opposition.
