Police officers Timo Janssens and Ronald Veekens spot a burglar during their night patrol. Ronald runs after criminal Dimitri Polak, but is later found dying in the arms of his partner Timo. During the murder investigation, Van In gets confronted with the hard mentality of the team of chief inspector Didier Vreebos. Van In finds an ally in the female inspector Jelle Cockx, but they are soon opposed by Cois Ketels and Barbara Delnaets of Internal Affairs. Suddenly a second murder takes place, with Van In ending up as the new prime suspect.

Van In is arrested on suspicion of murder and soon starts confessing. His colleagues cannot believe that he has anything to do with the case and continue the investigation. They are led to Philippe Cornu, manager of a transportation company, and his head of security Danny Buyens. Meanwhile Cois Ketels is determined to take revenge on the team of the LOD. Van In escapes and pays a visit to Didier Vreebos. Things soon get out of hand.

In the middle of the night, the dead body of Lieve Op de Beeck, a missing mother of two children, gets run over by a truck. The investigators initially consider suicide, but according to husband Paul Deswert that is almost impossible. Jelle Cockx goes undercover in Lieve's sports center. She subtly questions regular customer Loes about the regular fights between owner Dirk Pauwels and his wife. It seems that Dirk offers his female customers more than sports alone.

Marlies, a young teenage girl, disappears after a night out. Her father, the wealthy businessman Carlos Vermeire, immediately calls the police. According to Van In the disappearance is not yet worrying. He starts a low profile investigation, but that is not enough for Vermeire, who asks the press to help him. From that point things inevitably go out of hand. Meanwhile the police finds a charred body in the woods. Inspector Tom Smeekens is ready for his wedding, when there is put a huge damper on the festivities.

Ralph Schepens, a local criminal, is shot to death with the rare, eighty year old gun that was reported stolen by the wealthy Jewish diamond merchant Ari Kahn. Van In thinks Kahn is hiding something, until his team finds out that Schepens had recently drugged and raped the daughter of drug dealer Ali Silva. Van In also pays a visit to Brenda, the daughter of Schepens. It is a public secret she was frequently groped by her father. Mother and wife Charlotte Dondeyne does not seem to care about the whole situation. Meanwhile Kahn and his wife get an unexpected visit.

During a bank robbery, perpetrator Serge Muyters is shot by the manager. His companion runs away before the emergency services arrive. Serge survives, but is later found murdered in his hospital room. His inconsolable brother and mother are very angry with the police. Van In feels guilty and assures them that his team will find the killer. The investigation leads them to the swingers club of criminal Daniël De Greef, where inspectors Cockx and De Maegd start an undercover operation. Things threaten to go horribly wrong when Cockx looses her cover.

The night before his vernissage, the honored Alain Serneels is found death next to one of his modern art works. His wife Indira Brouwers and gallery owner Ernst Van Doren think he might have committed suicide. Van In soon finds out that there was a feud between Serneels and his colleague Adriaan De Wolf. He also discovers that Serneels had a homosexual affair with Carinus De Starck, Ernst Van Doren's boyfriend.

In broad daylight, Joerie Corneels, employee of the local slaughterhouse, is shot to death. Van In discovers that it has only been a week since Corneels kidnapped and tortured his boss Francis Steegmans. It is clear that he could not have done this without a partner. At the Steegmans house Van In notices that son Sean has a quarrel with his father and his young girlfriend. The team is sure that the young man knows more about the case, but suddenly it takes a different direction when new traces lead to animal rights activist Marijke Lierman. Meanwhile in prison, Van In's former fellow-inspector Ivo Verbruggen is about to be released.

Van In and his team investigate the bizarre murder of a garage owner. Soon a second murder takes place, making them suspect it is the work of a serial killer. All traces lead to Hendrik Meersman, a father who lost his daughter after she was hit by drunk driver Peter Van Kerkhoven. The man swears to have not drunk a single drop of alcohol ever since, but Meersman claims the opposite.

One morning Jens Paulussen, a psychiatric patient, discovers the dead body of one of the inhabitants of his institution. Investigating magistrate Andrea Kosinsky reveals that director Ludo Van de Vijver is a suspected embezzler, but Van In is sure that this has nothing to do with the case. He wants to interrogate the other patients, such as Tijl and Lily, but gets counteracted by madhouse supervisors Simone Buts en Kurt Vervaet.

Bruges is plagued by a series of carjackings. When one of the victims gets murdered, it becomes a high priority case. Few time later also Magda, the wife of commissioner De Kee, gets involved. All traces lead to Ivo Verbruggen, but Van In refuses to believe his former police partner has anything to do with it.

A sensitive murder case jeopardizes the promotion chances of commissioner De Kee. When information is leaked to the press, Van In starts to suspect his fellow inspector Tom Smeekens to be the mole. The case takes a sudden turn when a second victim is made in Tongeren, the district of Van In's ex-wife Hannelore Martens.

When inspector Tom Smeekens gets severely wounded in a bomb attack, Van In and his team are desperate to solve the case. Hannelore Martens decides to return to Bruges to help. In the end she will be the one solving the case, but with that she puts her life in serious danger.
