1420. Three months after Queen Elizabeth's death. King Wladyslaw Jagiello with his brother Duke Svidrigaila and young nobleman Jan Hincza on the way to Vilnius meet three Halshany princesses: Wasylisa, Mary and Sonka
Vytautas wants to marry King Jagiello to Princess Sonka, and Sigismund of Luxembourg to the widow of Wenceslas IV. Jagiello is most favorable to Sonka, but his brother Svidrigaila also desires her.
1420/1421. The King sends Zawisza the Black to Hungary as a messenger and spy. He negotiates a marriage with Ofka not to offend King Sigismund but really wants to marry young princess Sonka, who rejects Svidrigaila's advances.
Princess Hedwig dreams of marrying Boguslaw V, meanwhile Frederick Hohenzollern offers a marriage to his seven-year-old son. Sonka wants Jan Hincza to propose. Everyone thinks the King intends to marry her older sister Wasylisa.
The King is angry at the nobles outraged at his idea to marry the princess of Halshany, who is his brother's granddaughter. In a letter, Princess Hedwig grieves with Queen Barbara over her father's decision about her future marriage.
Hedwig's little fiancé, Frederick Hohenzollern, arrives at Wawel. The princess does not want to meet him. The boy runs around the castle and only Mikolaj Traba can calm him down. Wasylisa and Mary are waiting for the King in Vilnius.
Jagiello goes to Vilnius to meet the Holszanski family. Wasylisa is convinced that she will become his wife, but a misunderstanding comes to light. The King wants to marry Sonka. At Wawel, little prince Fredrick is making a mess.
Sonka accepts her fate but still loves Jan Hincza. Princess Hedwig decides to raise her fiancé. Jan Niestrasz sneaks into her good graces thanks to finding her dog. Wasylisa chooses Iwan Bielski as her husband.
1422. Princess Sonka gets baptised and takes a name Sophia. Soon a modest ceremony of her wedding to King Wladyslaw II Jagiello takes place in Nowogródek. Jan Hincza gets into a fight with Svidrigaila and is sent to the dungeon.
Sophia, the fourth wife of King Wladyslaw II Jagiello, arrives at Wawel Castle and immediately clashes with her stepdaughter Hedwig. She moves into the queen's chambers, where the Princess has lived since the death of the late Queen.
Sonka can't get used to court rules. Herman sabotages Hedwig's saddle to thwart an alliance with Brandenburg. The stepmother warns the princess, but Hedwig has no intention of thanking her. Olesnicki and Hincza go on a mission to Malbork.
Jagiello plans a war with the Teutonic Order. Sonka is worried about him and Hincz. New ladies-in-waiting Kachna and Eliszka arrive, whom Sonka and Olga know at their worst. Mikolaj Traba warns the King about Zbigniew Olesnicki.
The King goes off to war and leaves Sophia in Hincza's care. Hincza confesses his affection for the King's wife in confession. Princess Hedwig is still distanced from her stepmother. Ciolek writes down miracles of Queen Jadwiga of Poland.
The Golub war with the Teutonic Order continues. Teutonic spy Herman tries to poison Princess Hedwig. Stanislaw Ciolek returns to Wawel and entertains Sophia with Arthurian tales. The duel between the thieves Lech and Slawoj is underway.
Primate Traba with Zawisza the Black and Jastrzebiec go to meet King Sigismund of Luxembourg. Before dying, Traba does not manage to tell who the Teutonic spy is. Hedwig becomes enamored with Jan Hincza.
Zawisza the Black assures Sigismund that King Jagiello does not support his nephew in the fight for the Czech crown. Jagiello returns to Wawel. Sophia and Hedwig dance together at a feast, which is interrupted by news of Traba's death.
1423. After the death of Archbishop Traba, Olesnicki, Jastrzebiec and Szafraniec fight to become his successor. Zbigniew Olesnicki convinces the King that he is the best candidate by enumerating the flaws of his competitors.
Sophia thinks she's pregnant and celebrates that joy by giving gingerbread cookies to poor children. The King chooses Zbigniew Olesnicki as the new archbishop of Cracow. The spy Herman is hanged. Zawisza becomes a captive of the Hussites.
1424. The court prepares for Sophia's coronation. Eric of Pomerania, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden with Duke Boguslaw pay a visit. Archbishop Olesnicki advises how Sophia should host them during the absence of the King.
Sophia of Halshany is crowned queen of Poland. Jagiello learns of her gaffe during a visit by King Eric. Svidrigaila, taking advantage of Sophia and Hedwig's conflict, tries to get closer to his brother's wife. Zawisza the Black returns.
Three kings: Jagiello, Sigismund and Eric go for a ride together. Queen Barbara tries to convince princess Hedwig to marry Boguslaw but her niece thinks the duke is conceited. Strasz plots against Frederick. Sophia humiliates Svidrigaila.
The court rejoices over Queen Sophia's pregnancy. Kings Sigismund and Eric want to gain Vytautas' support in the idea of marrying Hedwig to Boguslaw. Jagiello asks him to delay the decision. Svidrigaila plots with Sigismund Korybut.
Sigismund Korybut assembled an army and set out for Prague. Strasz tries to give Sophia herbs to prevent her from giving birth, but Awdokia rushes to her rescue. Hynek steals marzipan and pays Dobek to help Brother Bdzigost.
Pregnant Sophia travels with Jagiello but her husband sends her home. The King has a prophetic dream. Sophia prematurely gives birth to her firstborn son.
Hedwig wants to welcome her father home but the king wants to see his newborn son first. He plans a baptism and a grand celebration. Strasz spreads rumors about Sophia.
1425. Papal envoy Bishop of Ostia brings a relic of a nail from the Cross of Christ. The royal couple announces the procession. The baptism of the king's first son Prince Wladyslaw takes place. Marshal Zbigniew of Brzezie dies.
The king and queen accept the townspeople's tribute to themselves and their son. Jagiello wants the nobility to do so as well. Princess Hedwig recalls that nobles paid tribute to her already and she should be heir to the throne.
Prince Wladislaw falls ill. Hedwig fasts and loses consciousness. Strasz spreads rumors that Awdokia is a witch. Bishop Olesnicki wants to become regent if the king dies.
The convention of the nobility does not go as Jagiello and Vytautas intended. Bishop Olesnicki grows in power and prepares the ground for his regency. Awdokia and Danil are in love.
