In order to write a truly authentic story of an escape from behind the Iron Curtain, Powers decides to travel to such a country and attempt to escape himself.
The police are baffled by a series of murders which have no apparently cause or connection. Powers is convinced that the crimes have been ordered by a crime syndicate and sets off after the killer.
While riding on a train, a passenger strikes up a conversation with Powers, then suddenly gives him a package and leaps out the compartment window. A blind storekeeper's predictions become the catalyst to overthrow a nation's duly elected government. Powers is suspicious because the prophet never makes predictions on anything but political subjects.
Powers gets a call from a member of "The Brotherhood", who is ready to blow the whistle on them as a fascist organization. When Powers goes to meet him, he is found murdered by "street thugs". Of course, Powers isn't buying it.
While interviewing people who witnessed a spectacular factory fire, Powers learns that subversive elements are committing arson to throttle a nation's industrial capacity.
