The Wood Whisperer

Assembly of a pm2000 table saw
I have been running a PM2000 in my shop for nearly 10 years and the move to Colorado afforded me the opportunity to sell the old one and replace it with a newer version that features a 50 fence and the heavier duty workbench extension. And I thought it would be a good time to show you how to assemble a Powermatic PM2000.

How to build a bartop arcade w/ raspberry pi
Nicole and I are big gamers and we both have fond memories of early PC and console games. While our two kids and business prevent us from diving into games like we used to, we'll always be gamers at heart. So when my buddy Brian Ibbott from Coverville asked me to help him build a bartop arcade w/ Raspberry Pi, I jumped on the opportunity.

Installing led shop lighting
We're working exclusively with American Green Lights who designed and supplied our lighting solution. The fixtures are PerformaLUX SL Series in both single strip 24 W models and 5-strip 60 W models. These units can save 50-60% compared to traditional fluorescent lights, have a lifetime of 120,000 hours, and feature a CRI of 92-95 (for color accuracy).

Installing acoustic panels
Most garages and shops feature lots of hard surfaces and that means voices and tool noise tends to bounce around the space creating lots of echo and reverberations. To combat that, I'm installing ATS Acoustic Panels (2 x 4) on the ceiling.

Shop update: end of phase 1
I'm officially done with Phase 1 of the garage to shop conversion and I'm ready to start building. I wanted to bring you up to speed by showing the various changes I've made up to this point for those who've been following along with my progress. None of these things warranted a standalone video so I figured I'd lump them all into one recap.

How to build a live edge slab coffee table
One of the most exciting things about moving to Denver is that I now have access to more live edge slab material. We needed a new coffee table and I also wanted to build something that would showcase the new Wood Whisperer Thread Taps, so a simple Live Edge Slab Coffee Table with metal legs fit the bill nicely.

Lift lock n' roll lathe mobility system
When I buy an extremely niche product, I don't typically make a video about it. But this one did such a good job of solving a problem for me and someone recently requested that I talk about it, so I figured I would make a quick video.

2017 Shop tour

Wed, Feb 22, 2017
Welcome to the official 2017 Shop Tour. If you've been with us since the beginning, you know that my shop has changed a few times due to various domestic reasons. Back in November 2016, we packed up the house and shop one last time to head to our new home in Denver, Colorado.

Knock down trestle table part 1 of 2
The table is a trestle design which keeps the legs out of the way and gives us plenty of overhang. The joinery is all mortise and tenon including some cool double wedged mortise and tenon joints. I even added extra supports in the middle of the table that will not only support the top but should also help keep the table top flat over time.

Make a kid size maui's hook from a 2×4
Recently, my son has been obsessed with the Disney movie Moana. One of the primary characters is the demigod Maui who wields a magical hook. The hook has a very distinct look and is adorned with special carvings. Using a single 2×4, I made a kid-sized version of the hook.

Looking for a durable outdoor finish? You've come to the right place. Looking for an inexpensive solution that will never require any maintenance? This is not the finish for you.

Youtube vs books
Recently, I came across a post in the Wood Whisperer Community Facebook Page where a new woodworker asked for advice on beginner-friendly books. Several folks replied with something like, "Don't waste your money and time, just go to YouTube." Every time you say something like this, a tiny baby bookmark bursts into flames.

Wiping varnish shootout
As much as for my own curiosity as everyone else's edification, I wanted to do a side by side comparison between some popular variations of wiping varnish. I've used all of these finishes in the past but I have never used them side by side. By finishing some test boards, I figured I could not only gather information about their application characteristics but also the resulting look of the finish.

Quick & easy mortises
Yesterday, a member of our Guild Facebook group described some difficulty they were having making mortises with a hand-held router. This is something I do quite frequently and the person jested that I make it look too easy. Like anything, making mortises gets easier with practice but I believe anyone can find success with this particular process if they just follow some simple guidelines.

How to create pillowed legs
Whenever I make legs for a table or chair, I find it difficult to leave them square and flat on each face. Ever since I saw David Marks pillow the outside faces of his Bubinga Coffee Table on WoodWorks, I always like to consider the possibility of using that technique to spice things up.

Cross-cut sled slot repair
One of the primary benefits of a cross-cut sled is the fact that the base provides zero-clearance, supporting the work through the entire cut and producing near tear out-free results. Over time, regular use can cause that slot to widen. Here's how you can fix it, without having to rebuild.

Tricked out bandsaws featuring carter products
The bandsaw is one of my favorite tools and if you treat it well, it will quickly become one of your favorites as well. While most modern bandsaws come with decent components, to begin with, there are companies like Carter Products who make high-quality after-market add-ons that can make your bandsaw better performing and easier to adjust. One of the best upgrades you can do is replacing the guide.

Nicole's wooden spatula
Nicole's favorite wooden spatula recently decided it had enough. The spoon was a layup from multiple pieces and featured two glue joints. With repeated exposure to moisture and heat, the joints eventually opened up. While the spatula is repairable, we decided we'd try to make something spatula as a fun collaborative project.

Dining chair

Mon, Aug 21, 2017
You might recall the Gaming Dining Table I built in season 9. Ever since then, Nicole has been asking repeatedly, "When do I get my chairs?" So I started designing a new chair that I'd eventually batch out for a total of six. The video I've assembled here is a quick look at the process of designing and building the chair.

Protecting outdoor furniture with epoxy feet
Mother Nature always wins. So when you make outdoor furniture you have two choices: commit to a regular maintenance schedule or come to terms with the weathered gray look. An easy thing you can do to help the cause is to prevent moisture from entering into the legs. This simple trick requires nothing more than epoxy and masking tape.

Resin cast memory frames
For this year's Woodworker's Fighting Cancer project, we're building memory frames. Inside the frame, we'll use epoxy to create a casting. This space can be used for memorabilia, fun stuff for the kids, or whatever kind of decoration you want.

Halloween router bowl
When most of us think of a wooden bowl, we think of the lathe. But you can also make bowls using the router. All you need is a template for the desired shape and a pattern bit to remove the stock. And fortunately, Eagle America has holiday-themed kits for making some incredibly cool bowls. These make great gifts and they are super easy to make.
