Six men work in an office in Whitehall. Private Hopper's bored with translating Russian and imagines musical scenes played out in the office. His replacement, Private Francis x2, arrives. Then there's Berry's sexy wife.
Private Francis gets into trouble when corporal Berry accidentally overhears Francis complaining to Hopper about how the corporal mistreats his wife. Further humiliation follows for Francis when, having lingered in a bookshop during lunch, he arrives back late at the office just as the first hints of the Suez Crisis are emerging. The man stalking Sylvia turns out to be Harold Atterbow, who plays the Wurlitzer organ in the cinema where she works as an usherette.
Hopper worries the Suez crisis will extend his stay in the army. This time it's the officers who are late to return from lunch, when a call comes though on the scrambler phone. Hopper falls in love when colonel Trekker brings his niece Lisa to visit the office.
Francis goes on a sneak date with Sylvia while Harold lurks nearby. Colonel Bernwood begins to break down mentally as his worries about the Suez Crisis overwhelm him.
