After Lola Dupre's lover, Philip Whitney, abandons her, she becomes a famous opera singer and marries the wealthy Senator Fitzmaurice. Lola's fame rekindles Philip's passion for her, but when she scorns him, he threatens to reveal her past unless she provides him with money and jewels. Philip wins the affection of the senator's daughter Marie and asks her to marry him, although he continues to flirt with Lola. On the night Philip plans to elope with Marie, he insults and attacks Lola in her room, and in the struggle, she stabs him. Marie, who later is seen bending over the body, is accused of the murder, but Lola confesses. At the trial, her plea that "a woman's honor is her life" wins Lola her freedom, and she and the senator begin a new life.—AFI
