After mild-mannered art-buyer Bernard Bottle is fired by his greedy boss and abandoned by his girlfriend, he discovers a genie in an old bottle. The genie immediately embraces the modern world and helps Bernard on the side.

An art dealer befriends a genie whom he frees from a lamp which he has been imprisoned with by an evil wizard for 2000 years for the accidental death of the evil wizard's daughter when the art dealer is fired by his greedy and corrupt boss.—Daniel Williamson

A genie is punished by an evil wizard by being confined to a lamp somewhere in Arabia. 2000 years later in England, art dealer Bernard Bottle, who has just been sacked by his nasty and greedy boss and then discovered that his girlfriend has gone off with his so-called best mate, taking almost everything from his flat with her, decides to give the lamp a rub. The next thing he knows, the genie is loose, and Bernard befriends him and finds that he can give him as many wishes as he likes.
