Summary A wealthy mine owner's wife gets him to hire Jean Scholast, a footloose adventurer, as a reward for saving her. Unbeknown to the wife, Scholast is a fortune hunter and soon poisons the husband and marries the wife. He gains power of attorney and uses it to cheat her out of her husband's property, which he promptly sells, then pockets the money and deserts her.
