The painter Marquard von Polheim suddenly loses all inspiration after being awarded a prestigious art prize. While his life partner Maria, also a painter, gradually distances herself from him, Marquard embarks on an aimless search

In a small town in the south, Marisol, a beautiful eighteen-year-old in a wedding dress, is crying desperately. She is re-living a flashback to the most important moments in her life. Her friendship with Francesca, which has now ended, the link to Gianni, extrovert and sunny, the difficult relationship with her parents, Giuseppe and Rosa, her paralyzed mother. Marisol had to leave school due to her difficult family situation. Meanwhile, her relationship with Gianni continued, and she fell pregnant. They decide to get married, but when Giuseppe discovers that his daughter is pregnant, he kills Gianni on the day of their wedding. Marisol now wants to leave her home town, but she discovers that she cannot move away from her place of birth, from the smell of the sea, from her childhood.

Three part melodrama later reworked in the 50s by Matarazzo: A count has an illegitimate child with a woman who his elderly mother tries to separate him from, and who later retreats into a convent.
