Jessie Fischer, a single mother has lost her job and committed shoplifting has been sentenced to social work in a retirement home.There she meets Walter Voss called "The General" who is very bad tempered,he doesn't want to eat, throws the plate and the food through the window ,etc .But Jessie is as stubborn as Walter and little by little Jessie knows why Walter is in that retirement home and they become good friends.

Jacques and Gisèle, who are just married, are starting their honeymoon. The adaptation of a french novel from 1864 describes the idyllic life of a convinced bachelor, Fritz Kobus, in a village in Alsace. With help by the local rabbi, he does get married to young Suzel in the end.
