The student Judith is pursued by bankruptcies, bad luck and mishaps in her life, but she bravely defies her fate. Some days, however, everything seems to be conspiring against her. Judith seeks comfort from her boyfriend, but Holger, who is in his late teens, would rather go around with his clique. Judith suddenly decides to break up with him. When she returns home visibly hungover, her neighbor Leo becomes seriously worried. The charming set designer not only takes care of broken sockets and drains in Judith's apartment, but has secretly long since fallen in love with the woman next door. However, Leo is too shy to reveal himself and the stressed Judith simply ignores him. Judith acts snippy and aloof, but in reality she is sensitive and vulnerable. When she not only loses her bistro job, but is also responsible for her sister Rebecca's children destroying the decorations for a fashion show, it's too much even for Judith. She wants to lie down in the bathtub with the hairdryer, but Leo stops her. He finally loses his shyness and also gets Judith to live out her artistic fantasy.

Traumatized by his recent divorce, lovelorn Stanley takes off cross country to San Francisco, landing at his enterprising sister Nancy's doorstep. Nancy, who makes counterculture cinema-themed t-shirts, lives in "Camille's Castle," a frozen-in-time legacy home for displaced artists and outcasts. Together, they search for the remaining scraps of San Francisco's Summer of Love, and wind up at odds with each other. Countercurrents is an aggressive tribute to the counterculture films of the late 60's, with "easter eggs" in no short supply.

The imperious landowner Murzavetskaya is trying to seize the property of the naive and wealthy widow Kupavina. The blackmail attempt fails because Berkutov appears, an even more dexterous and crafty person, and marries Kupavina.

John and Molly return home to attend a funeral for their mother, Judy, after being estranged from their parents for more than a decade. Confrontations with their domineering father bring up past conflicts, and John and Molly struggle to come to terms with the death of a parent they never really knew. As the audience experiences the past from Judy's perspective, John and Molly learn there is more that connects them to their parents than they ever could have realized.
