A young girl and her mother try to make a living in a small fishing village.

Fausta is a survivor who dreams of building a house on land she's buying on the installment plan. Meanwhile she lives in a one-room tin-roofed hovel with her idle husband, João, and she works as a maid. The elderly but randy Zé, who carries advertising signs at the train station, buys her perfume and invites her to spend Sundays with him. She accepts. After João injures his foot, stops work, drinks more, and wallows in self pity, Fausta sees Zé as her way out, if he'll help her buy the land and build a house. Through it all she's a scourge, arguing, jeering and being jeered, but also displaying the spirit and energy of her idol, Tina Turner.

Toby, a gifted chemist slumming as a high school teacher, stops on a quiet stretch of Ozark highway to help an alluring young girl named Laurie whose car trouble--and attraction to the handsome stranger--pales in the face of her real problems: She's on the run from police and involved in a dangerous criminal debt with Jeff, her violent, on-again, off-again boyfriend, who also cons a ride from Toby. With Laurie as a grudging accomplice, Jeff kidnaps Toby to an abandoned farm, hoping to force him to cook synthetic heroin in order to pay off 'Familia Sin Amore', the group of vicious Bolivian drug traffickers to whom he's desperately in debt. When Toby proves unwilling, Jeff with the help of a local thug named Judge Bass, kidnaps Annette, Toby's ex-wife. The criminals hold her as security, threatening to frame Toby for her murder should he escape. The situation grows ever more tense as Toby asks for a share of the profits, Laurie disappears, Annette refuses to play the victim, and Familia Sin Amore comes to collect....

When his successful brother falls ill, a wastrel must step up to take over the family business. This leads to an adulterous, tragic relationship with his brother's wife.

Over the course of one week in 1988, the search for a missing teammate, parental expectations, a burgeoning sexual awakening and the rock concert of the century all threaten to jolt a 16-year-old into adulthood.
