Episode 1 • Sep 02, 2001
Black Leopard
During 1920s, Lu Zhenhua, as a commander, who earned the nickname of "Black Leopard" and is a well-known figure in northeastern China. Zhenhua married his eighth concubine by capture, Fu Wenpei, who grown up in a literary family, then, the ninth concubine, Wang Xueqin, a lesser-known opera actress. The Japanese had invaded China from the Northeast, and they formed a Japanese state in the eastern region. Hence, in 1931, he brought Wenpei, Xueqin and their children to Shanghai. Although he was no longer a commander and had left most of his fortune in the Northeast, Zhenhua was rich enough to live in the most affluent part of Shanghai - the French territory. Xueqin who was a domineering lady drove out Wenpei, together with her daughter Yiping, and aide Li and his family from the house. It was the autumn of 1935, when Ruping first met Shuhuan and Dufei on the bus. Dufei and Shuhuan were reporters. They snatched a picture of Qin Wuye and were chased by his bodyguards. In his haste, Shuhuan passed the film negative to Ruping for safekeeping. As Ruping's brother, Erhao worked in the same press as Shuhuan and Dufei; they became friends. In 1935, Yiping was 18 years old, a deprived of education for her Shanghai Music Academy. One night, it was pouring heavily. Yiping left home for "that side" to ask for monthly allowance from her father.

I Will Revenge!
When Yiping entered the Lu's mansion, Erjie's toy gun bullet landed on Yiping's forehead. Ruping was wearing a set of seven bangles that costs $20. Zhenhua asked about the well being of Wenpei. Zhenhua wanted Xueqin to give them $20 but Yiping requested for $200, as they owed 2 months' rent and needed new clothes and shoes. Xueqin was sarcastic to Yiping and Zhenhua sided Xueqin. Yiping argued with Zhenhua. She questioned why Zhenhua couldn't offer them their basic necessities when he can buy toys for Erjie, new bangles for Ruping, rear horses and hire driver and maids. This comment angered Zhenhua he whipped Yiping with a horsewhip. Yiping vowed that she would not accept any cent from Zhenhua and would seek revenge for all the hurt they had inflicted on her that night. When Yiping left, it was still raining very heavily. Shuhuan was passing by and he helped Yiping. He brought Yiping to his apartment. Shuhuan was curious about her and kept asking for her name and the person who hurt her. When she learned that Shuhuan knew the Lu Family, she left in anger, as she did not want to have anything to do with friends of Lu Family. Yiping went home in torn and drenched clothes. She resolved to earn her own living but was unsuccessful in finding a job. One day, she went to Qin Wuye's Da Shanghai (a famous nightclub) to look for an office job but tried her hand at singing "Jubalaya". She was offered the job of a singer but she declined.

To Be a Singer?
In her desperation, Yiping borrowed money from her best friend, Fangyu. At the same time, Ruping sent some of her own savings and a pair of used shoes to Yiping but was rejected by Yiping. Dufei, Shuhuan, Erhao and Ruping visited a 92-year old lady who was looking for her old mate "a cat". The cat was found up on the roof's drainpipe. Shuhuan saved the cat.

White Rose
Shuhuan, Dufei, Erhao, Ruping and Mengping went to the countryside for picnic. Li Fuguan came to look for Wenpei. He wanted to borrow money from her, as he was in debt. His daughter, Keyun was insane and had damaged her neighbour's properties. As a result, Li Fuguan had to pay for the damages. Given Li Fuguan and her own situation, Yiping accepted the job as a singer in Da Shanghai and she used the name "White Rose". Dufei and Shuhuan went to Da Shanghai to report on the Qin Wuye's new business and they met the beautiful Yiping singing Misty Rain(Chinese Pinyin:Yan Yu Meng Meng). Shuhuan was attracted to her immediately.
Episode 5 • Apr 03, 2001
Birthday
Shuhuan was moved by her singing. He went to the backstage to visit her and Yiping recognised him. Qin Wuye demanded Yiping sing an extra song. Yiping refused, as she was late for home. As she was nearly beaten by the bodyguards, Shuhuan and Dufei came to her rescue. But there were too many bodyguards and they were hurt. In tears, Yiping agreed to sing but Qin Wuye relented. After Shuhuan's explanation, Qin Wuye accepted Shuhuan and Dufei's request to interview him. Li Fuguan sent Yiping home. It was 8 May and it was Yiping's 19th birthday. Wenpei prepared a lot of food for Yiping. She invited Li Fuguan to have supper with them. Shuhuan interviewed Qin Wuye while Dufei took photos of him. Qin Wuye invited Shuhuan to Da Shanghai to continue the interview. It was 18 May and it was Ruping's 19th birthday (Ruping was born in 1917). Lu Family threw a birthday party for her. Shuhuan and Dufei were also invited. They put a total of 83 candles. Shuhuan said when Ruping is 83 years old it will be exactly Year 2000. He wanted to make a date with everyone to celebrate Ruping's 83rd birthday in Year 2000. During the party, Zhenhua suddenly remembered Yiping. Her birthday was 10 days before Ruping ago. He asked Erhao to send some money to Yiping immediately. Erhao met Fangyu at Yiping's house and Erhao was attracted to Fangyu. Yiping refused Zhenhua's money, Erhao took the money back in anger. That night, Yiping sang Occasionally(Chinese Pinyin:Ou Ran). Shuhuan was conducting the interview with Qin Wuye but paused when she sang.

You Help Me Again
Yiping was rude to her guests and Qin Wuye slapped her. Shuhuan came to the rescue again. He sent her home on a horse carriage. Shuhuan expressed his interest in her and asked her for her real name. Yiping did not reveal, as she knew he was a friend of Lu Family. Dufei and Ruping delivered mail from readers to the old lady but found that her cat was sick. They sent the cat to the doctor but on the way home, the cat ran away. Old lady was so sad. Ruping brought the old lady home to look after her.

She Is My Another Sister
Shuhuan suggested placing an advertisement in the newspaper to appeal for readers to return the cat if they found it. Erhao was courting after Fangyu. Erhao suggested to Ruping that they should visit Da Shanghai, as there must be something very attractive to have kept Shuhuan there every night. Yiping was singing Cut Lover(Chinese Pinyin:Xiao Yuan Jia) followed by Flying(Chinese Pinyin:Man Chang Fei Yuan Wu Qu). Erhao and Ruping were shocked to see Yiping there. Dufei and Shuhuan later found that "White Rose" is actually Erhao's half sister, Yiping. Erhao created a scene at Da Shanghai and Shuhuan suggested they discussed matters at his house. After heated discussion, Shuhuan sent Yiping home on his bicycle. Shuhuan told Yiping he was glad that she was not Erhao's girlfriend. Yiping agreed to meet Shuhuan the following afternoon.

Many readers sent in their pets and the whole press was filled with animals. It was chaotic but they managed to find the cat of the old lady. Dufei volunteered to return the cat with Ruping so that Shuhuan could go ahead with his appointment with Yiping. Shuhuan expressed his great interest in Yiping. Li Fuguan was waiting for Yiping but other trishaw pullers were angry that he cut the queue. Qin Wuye came to the rescue. Yiping introduced Shuhuan to Li Fuguan. Shuhuan offered to send Yiping home every night. Yiping was surprised one morning that Shuhuan showed up at her doorstep. Wenpei was pleased to meet Shuhuan but Yiping told her mother not to pin any hope. They visited Li Fuguan. When Shuhuan met Keyun, he offered to introduce a brain specialist to her. After visiting Keyun, Shuhuan said he wanted to be always there for Yiping to comfort and love her each time she feels down.

You're Jealous
Zhenhua wanted Ruping to send money to Yiping. Yiping refused to accept but Ruping insisted that Yiping should return the money to Zhenhua herself. Shuhuan and Dufei were visiting Lu Family when Yiping came to Lu Family to return the money. She saw how well Xueqin treated Shuhuan. Yiping realized that Shuhuan was Xueqin's ideal son-in-law for Ruping. Yiping returned the money to her father. In his anger, he pushed Yiping and she fell on the coffee table. Ruping offered Yiping a change of new clothes. Yiping saw the intimate photos of Ruping and Shuhuan and was upset. She left in a hurry and Shuhuan ran after her. Shuhuan realized that Yiping was jealous. Shuhuan expressed that his love for her and they had their first kiss. She resolved to take revenge by snatching Shuhuan from Ruping. Nevertheless, Yiping did not expect that she had really fallen in love with Shuhuan. Shuhuan was at Da Shanghai again and Yiping sang Miss You(mandarin tittle:Hao Xiang Hao Xiang). Ruping's schoolmate, Zhang was preaching about the impending war when Dufei visited Ruping in the university campus. Zhang wanted to commit suicide. Dufei tried to snatch away the knife and in the struggle, Dufei injured his arm. Ruping was sad thinking that Shuhuan would never be her boyfriend. Erhao asked Shuhuan to leave Yiping but Shuhuan revealed that his love for her encompassed her virtues and faults. He warned Erhao not to who badmouth Yiping.

Boat
Ruping came to nurse Dufei. Ruping was heartbroken over the lost relationship with Shuhuan. Dufei expressed his love to Ruping, but she did not reciprocate. Even though Ruping rejected him, Dufei promised to wait for her to change her mind. Erhao continued his chase for Fangyu and she liked him a little. Yiping kept persuading Fangyu to leave Erhao. When Erhao learned of that, he went to Da Shanghai and splashed wine on Yiping. Shuhuan was upset over Erhao's behavior. Yiping sang Boat(mandarin tittle:Chuan). Shuhuan sent Yiping home on the horse carriage. Yiping commented that she was used to that kind of humiliation from the Lu Family. Yiping related to Shuhuan the story of how she and her mother left the Lu Family when she was 15 years old. Ruping was burning her photos taken with Shuhuan and the curtains and then the room went on fire. Erhao bought breakfast for Shuhuan and Dufei and apologized to Shuhuan. He asked Shuhuan to reconsider Ruping but Shuhuan declined.

The Mental Hospital
Shuhuan told Ruping that he could only accept her as a friend. Ruping wanted to know how much he loved Yiping. Shuhuan replied that he had no answer but confessed that it was unbearable for him not to see her for a day. Ruping gave them her blessings. Erhao confessed all his past girlfriends to Fangyu. Yiping was playing with Keyun when Shuhuan came to inform Yiping about the Keyun's appointment to see the brain specialist. Shuhuan and Yiping accompanied Keyun to visit the doctor at the mental hospital. Shuhuan, Erhao and Dufei discussed how they should create an opportunity for all the six to meet. Shuhuan thought that they should become friends instead of being enemies. Dufei visited Ruping at her school. Dufei sent a basket of fruits to Ruping but ended up injuring his bottoms.

The Secret Is Out
Ruping accidentally leaked Yiping's job at Da Shanghai to Mengping. Mengping went to visit Da Shanghai and saw Yiping's photo outside. She informed Lu Zhenhua. Yiping sang Occasionally(mandarin tittle:Ou Ran) and Long Long Ago(mandarin tittle:Wang Shi Nan Wang) when her father arrived at Da Shanghai. Zhenhua demanded that she resign from Da Shanghai but Yiping refused. Shuhuan quarreled with Yiping, as he was upset with her treatment to her father. He saw her father's efforts to reconcile with her. Shuhuan waited for Yiping at her doorstep till dawn and apologized.

I Want to Operate on You
Shuhuan explained that he wanted to "operate" on Yiping and remove her ¨hatred cyst〃. Yiping was afraid she would harm Shuhuan if he continued his relationship with her. Yiping surrendered to Shuhuan and took his advice. On her way to Lu Family, Shuhuan and Yiping saw Xueqin in a familiar black car. Her secret lover, Wei Guangxiong, sent Xueqin and Erjie home. Xueqin bought some cakes for the family. When Yiping and Shuhuan arrived, she insulted Yiping. Yiping sought her father's acceptance of her job at Da Shanghai. Zhenhua disagreed and they argued again. Zhenhua commented that Yiping's contract with Da Shanghai was invalid as Yiping was below maturity age of 20 years old. Yiping refused to give in as Wenpei had given in excessively. As a result, she had to give up her husband and home to another woman. She went further to warn her father of the distrusting people around him. Erjie took the horsewhip for Zhenhua but he sat motionlessly. Yiping calmed down and told her father that she would leave him to fight it out with Qin Wuye. When she left with Shuhuan, Mengping went after them and gave her a slap. Shuhuan was so upset with himself for persuading Yiping to visit the Lu Family. Erhao and Ruping scolded Mengping for slapping Yiping but Xueqin praised her for doing the right thing. Ruping talked back at Xueqin and was slapped. Ruping commented that it was Heaven's retribution. Erhao invited Ruping to go horse ridding with Dufei, Fangyu and himself. Dufei fell from the horse, as it was his first riding experience. Ruping cried when she found out that Dufei was unconscious but got angry when she realized that he had pretended.Wenpei stood in the heavy rain to emotional blackmail Yiping to stop working in Da Shanghai. Shuhuan promised Wenpei that he would take good care of Yiping and ensured her safety.

Necklace
Yiping sent monthly allowance to Li Fuguan and took Keyun out. Keyun climbed up to the Big Clock Tower to look for a swallow. Worried that Keyun might fall from the Big Clock Tower, Yiping called Shuhuan to help. Dufei and Shuhuan came to the rescue. Yiping questioned Li Fuguan why he left Lu Family. Li Fuguan related how Xueqin accused Keyun for stealing her pearl necklace and even beat her with a feather duster. Yiping tried to reconcile with her father and they went horse riding. Yiping promised to stop singing in two months' time. Zhenhua confirmed to Yiping that he had committed a lot of misdeeds. As Dufei broke the camera while trying to save Keyun, Yiping bought a new one to replace it. Dufei was reporting on vases at an exhibition and invited Ruping along. At the exhibition, Dufei broke almost all the vases while talking to her. While walking along the park, they met a little young girl who was beaten by her father.

Romance in the Rain
Dufei tried to help the little girl but was pricked by a cactus instead. While trying to take care of Dufei, Ruping found a lot of dirty linen and helped to wash. Shuhuan helped too. Ruping recognized the shirt Shuhuan wore during the picnic and was saddened. When Shuhuan hugged Ruping, Yiping and Dufei arrived. Yiping was very angry and ran away. Shuhuan went after her and they quarreled at the sidewalk. Yiping asked for a split. For a few days, Shuhuan did not look for her. When he finally went to Da Shanghai to see Yiping, she sang Misty Rain(mandarin tittle:Yan Yu Meng Meng). Yiping thanked her guests for sending her flowers and drank with them. Shuhuan was angry and they fought again. Shuhuan felt sorry. He waited for Yiping at her door and they made up in the morning. It started to rain. Shuhuan said he couldn't live without Yiping. They kissed (third kiss) passionately in the rain. Erhao, Fangyu, Dufei and Ruping met in a coffeehouse and decided to visit Da Shanghai to make up with Yiping.

Story in the Rain
Erhao, Fangyu, Dufei and Ruping went to Da Shanghai to visit Yiping. Yiping sang "Story in th Rain"(Yu Zhong De Gu Shi). Yiping invited Shuhuan, Erhao, Fangyu, Dufei and Ruping on stage to sing "Orchids"(Xin Lan Hua Cao). Yiping and Shuhuan danced after their performance. Shuhuan related the lyrics of her song "Yu Zhong De Gu Shi" to their reconciliation. Shuhuan liked the Yiping that was full of love and forgiveness. He wished for things to remain in a world of love. Everyone was happy except Ruping when she saw how intimate Shuhuan and Yiping were. Yiping told her mother that she loved Shuhuan deeply. Wenpei told Yiping how her Father used to dote on Xinping. Because of Wenpei and Shuhuan, Yiping resolved to make peace with Lu Family. On her way to visit her father, she saw the same black car picking Xueqin. Zhenhua was angry with Mengping for being rude to Yiping. Yiping left to avoid further argument. Xueqin has gone to meet her secret lover, Wei Guangxiong. Xueqin calmed Guangxiong down when he was upset with her reluctance to leave Zhenhua. The main editor told Shuhuan that Qin Wuye's story was not popular with readers. He wanted them to cover touching stories of poor citizen. Shuhuan and Dufei decided to write a story about Li Fuguan as a trishaw puller. A triad gang was collecting protection money. Li Fuguan tried to help his friend but was beaten up. Shuhuan and Dufei helped him. Li Fuguan was badly injured but insisted on continuing with his work.

Shuhuan wanted Keyun visit the brain specialist again. Dufei volunteered to help Li Fuguan in his assignments but got himself into more trouble. In the end he had to pay another trishaw puller to fetch a customer. Yiping went horse riding with Zhenhua and she questioned him of his bad deeds. Shuhuan went to Lu Family with Yiping. Zhenhua ordered a riding costume for Yiping as she rode well. Xueqin started a fight with Yiping again. Yiping was determined to find out the identity of the father of Keyun's son is. Yiping questioned her father how many women he has raped. Zhenhua was angered and raised a rice bowl to hit Yiping but was stopped by Shuhuan. She reminded them of Li Fuguan and family. Both Zhenhua and Xueqin were shocked. Shuhuan was upset with Yiping's eagerness to find out who cheated Keyun, as it would hurt both her father and herself. Erhao and Fangyu expressed their love for each other. Dufei searched for gifts for Ruping.

Happiness
Dufei finally bought a "happy" bone for Ruping but was rejected by Ruping. Dufei was beaten by a dog while trying to present the to Ruping. Yiping and Shuhuan brought Keyun to a cultural procession and Keyun went berserk again. When Keyun's mental illness worsened, Li Fuguan disclosed to Yiping that his daughter had suffered from depression after her child's death. Erhao, Ruping's brother, was the father of the dead child. Yiping was very shocked and wanted to inform her good friend, Fangyu but was stopped by Shuhuan. Dufei disguised as a waiter trying to flop Ruping's matchmaking session. Dufei created a scene during Ruping's matchmaking session with Shi Lei, the son of a banker arranged by Xueqin.

Keyun Is Mad!
Yiping and Shuhuan went to Fangyu's house to warn her about Erhao. Erhao was angry with Yiping for sowing discord between them. Zhenhua visited Wenpei and made up with Yiping. Thereafter, they went horse riding. Erhao is still very sad that Fangyu suspected him. Yiping decided not to blow up the issue, as both Keyun and Erhao were only 16 years old when the incident happened. However one day after a disagreement, Yiping brought Erhao to Li Fuguan's house to meet Keyun. Erhao was shocked to find out that his mother had lied to him that Keyun had married someone else. With this secret unraveled, Erhao's relationship with his current girlfriend, Fangyu became strained.

Anger
Erhao was shocked to see the insane Keyun. Erhao recalled his past with Keyun, the scene when he gave Keyun a ring made of grass. Li Fuguan blamed Yiping and Shuhuan for bringing Erhao to their family. He wanted to leave Shanghai now that Erhao had found them. Yiping informed Zhenhua so that he could stop Li Fuguan from leaving Shanghai. Shuhuan expressed his love again to Yiping. Shuhuan sent Yiping to Da Shanghai. Yiping sang "Since I Left"(Zi Cong Li Bie Hou).

Xueqin's Revenge
Xueqin blamed Yiping for disclosing the Keyun's secret and instructed her secret lover, Wei Guangxiong to teach Yiping a lesson. Qin Wuye tried to uncover the mastermind of the attack, but to no avail. Qin Wuye agreed to let Yiping stop singing in Da Shanghai after seeing that she was badly injured.

Happiness
Yiping stopped singing at Da Shanghai. Zhenhua demanded Erhao marry Keyun. Erhao promised to help Keyun recall her past and marry her if she cannot remember after two years. Following the doctor's instructions, Yiping, Shuhuan, Erhao, Dufei, Fangyu and Ruping grouped together to help Keyun regain her memory. When Fangyu witnessed the heartbreaking scenes, she decided to break off with Erhao. Erhao explained that he was helping out of his guilt, not out of love. Dufei suggested that the Group help Fangyu find happiness.

Joyful, Joyful
Yiping was against the idea, as she doubts Erhao's love for Fangyu. Under Shuhuan's persuasion, Yiping finally relented and joined the Group. The whole group rejoiced at Da Shanghai and Yiping sang "Joyful,Joyful"(Huan Le Song). Shuhuan reconciled with Yiping because of her help towards Fangyu and Erhao. She confessed that she had gone against her wishes many times for his sake. Dufei presented to Ruping a fruit called ¨Stupid〃 fruit at the market and caused a big commotion at the market. Yiping saw the secret meeting between Xueqin and her lover while waiting for Shuhuan to buy tickets for a movie.

Would You Marry Me?
Yiping told Shuhuan about her discovery. Shuhuan suggested getting Qin Wuye to help gather information on the owner of the car Xueqin was in. Ruping went on a date with Shi Lei. Dufei and Erhao followed her and caused another big commotion at the countryside. Zhenhua decided to buy a house for Wenpei and Yiping but Xueqin disagreed. Yiping warned her father that Xueqin was dangerous. Heeding her advice, Zhenhua took control of all the finances. Mengping was angry with Yiping and tripped her purposely. Yiping injured her forehead. Shuhuan told Yiping that he would like to take her to Nanjing to meet his parents. He promised to take care of her for the rest of her life.

Memories
Yiping asked Shuhuan if that was a proposal. Yiping said she had to consider. The group planned many activities to help Keyun recall her past. The Group went riding, fishing and visited the wishing well. They also organized a Mongolian campfire to help Keyun. Zhenhua and Wenpei met at the bridge when they were on the way to Li Fuguan's house. Yiping and Shuhuan took Keyun out again. Keyun recovered slowly and could finally recognize Erhao.

Dufei gave Ruping a "Ru Yi" and Ruping's classmates teased her by throwing the "Ru Yi" around. Dufei fell into the water while trying to catch the "Ru Yi". Ruping admitted to Dufei that she still loved Shuhuan and had no place in her heart for Dufei. Shuhuan heard Ruping's words. Dufei got angry with the "Ru Yi" and tried to break it by hitting a plank of wood but instead hit Ruping's finger. Shuhuan rushed in but Dufei asked him to look for Yiping. Shuhuan told Ruping that he overheard what she said. However, he left Dufei to nurse her wound.

Shuhuan blamed Yiping for stopping him to help Mengping. Shuhuan quarreled with Yiping and he was sad. Shuhuan injured himself very badly during a fight with Japanese soldiers while trying to interview the demonstrators. Qin Wuye bailed him out of jail. Shuhuan was having a fever. Dufei informed Yiping and they reconciled.

Yiping reconciled with Shuhuan. The group continued to help Keyun recall her past. Erhao picked a flower on the rock for Keyun and rode a horse to find the missing words " Promise of Love" engraved on a rock. Chinese New Year was round the corner and Shuhuan had to go back to Nanjing for reunion dinner. He did not invite Yiping as he was having doubts about their love. Zhenhua met Yiping and Wenpei at Li Fuguan's house for reunion dinner.

Erhao and Dufei waited outside the church during Chinese New Year. Dufei brought a live duck and 4 artificial ducks as presents for Ruping. One of the artificial duck was red in color and it represented his heart for her. Shuhuan wrote to Yiping telling her how he missed her the very minute they separated at the train station. He promised to return on time. Yiping sang again at Da Shanghai. Erhao, Fangyu, Dufei and Ruping joined Yiping at Da Shanghai to celebrate Chinese New Year. Dufei bought a yellow crystal duckling for Ruping and Erhao bought a gold heart pendant for Fangyu. Dufei told Yiping that Shuhuan had a present for her. Yiping sang î›"稱î›"稱 (Hao Xiang Hao Xiang) at Da Shanghai. Yiping was disappointed that Shuhuan cannot be by her side during Chinese New Year. Shuhuan wrapped himself as a present to surprise Yiping and Yiping was so happy that she was speechless. They hugged for a long time in front of all the people at Da Shanghai's dressing room. The scene saddened Ruping. Dufei comforted her. Shuhuan told Yiping that he has sorted out his thoughts in this trip and confirmed his love for her. Mengping discovered her pregnancy. Ruping comforted Mengping and sought Xueqin's help. Shuhuan brought Yiping's photo to show his family and his parents decided to visit her in Shanghai the following month. Shuhuan and Yiping visited Lu Family to inform Zhenhua of their impending marriage.

Mingping Is Pregnant
Zhenhua discovered out that Mengping was pregnant. At the same time, Erhao and Xueqin found out that Yiping and Shuhuan were present when they saw Mengping were with the bad guys at Da Shanghai. They were angry that they did nothing to help her. Zhenhua demanded that Mengping gave birth to the baby and sent it for adoption. Zhenhua, Shuhuan, Erhao and Dufei nabbed the four culprits and sent them to the police station. Yiping read in the newspapers about Robin Hood and immediately knew Shuhuan was the Robin Hood. She checked on Shuhuan to see if he was injured. Shuhuan revealed that Robin Hood consisted of four persons and her father was one of them. Keyun became insane again thinking of Erhao. She was making buns day and night. She blamed herself for causing Erhao to dislike her. Erhao came to her house to calm her down but she shocked everyone by kissing him. Yiping and Shuhuan discussed about Erhao's problem. They jokingly quarreled over Shuhuan's liking for Ruping.

Dairy
Xueqin found an illegal doctor to perform an abortion on Mengping but due to over bleeding; she had to be sent to the hospital. Mengping managed to keep her life but she lost her fertility. Zhenhua requested Wenpei to visit Mengping together with him and Wenpei reluctantly agreed. When Yiping knew that her mother had gone to the hospital, she rushed to the hospital too. At the hospital, Xueqin was angry to see Wenpei there. Yiping and Shuhuan arrived in time. Yiping protected her mother from being humiliated and started another argument. Shuhuan persuaded Yiping to leave. At home, Yiping blamed her mother for accepting Zhenhua's invitation to hospital. Shuhuan was angry that Yiping spoke rudely to her mother. Yiping quarreled with Shuhuan and ran out of the house. Yiping sorted out her thoughts and returned home to reconcile with him. When she went to her room, she was shocked to see Shuhuan reading her diary. He was reading her resolution to snatch Ruping from Shuhuan after she knew that he was Xueqin's ideal son-in-law. Shuhuan was hurt to know that Yiping had used him as a revenge tool.

Yiping begged him to read on to the later part of the diary. Shuhuan flipped to the page she wrote after she quarreled with him over his misbehavior with Ruping on the rooftop. Shuhuan left in a fury and injured his hand. Dufei asked Yiping to visit Shuhuan but she refused. Then, he informed Erhao and Ruping. In his unconsciousness, Shuhuan kissed Ruping when she tried to bandage his hand. Ruping accompanied Shuhuan for the night. Shuhuan went jogging and further injured himself through street fights. Yiping tortured herself by washing clothes and doing the other housework day and night. Fangyu comforted Yiping and she wanted Fangyu to read the whole diary to Shuhuan. Erhao dragged Shuhuan to the park to listen to Fangyu read Yiping's diary but he refused. Shuhuan used his injured hand to hit the boxing bag and further injured himself. Ruping was saddened by his actions when she saw how badly Shuhuan's hand was bleeding.

Separation
Shuhuan told Ruping that it was no longer possible for him and Yiping to reconcile. Ruping was so happy that she kissed Shuhuan. Ruping offered Shuhuan her love and promised that she would not mind being a replacement. Yiping met Fangyu at the park and was disappointed to know that Shuhuan did not want to know the remaining part of her diary. She was further saddened when she knew Ruping was by his side for the past few days. Yiping believed that he was using the diary as an excuse to part with her. The real reason was that he felt bad about Mengping's incident and he still had feelings for Ruping. Shuhuan visited Zhenhua and told him of his separation with Yiping. Yiping went horse riding with Zhenhua. Zhenhua wanted to help her talk to Shuhuan but Yiping begged him not to interfere. Yiping went to Shuhuan's office to explain how she had changed her ways to suit him. Dufei was happy that Yiping came to look for Shuhuan and was confident that Shuhuan and Yiping will make up. He prepared candlelight dinner and invited Ruping. Shuhuan returned and told them that he did not reconciled with Yiping. Ruping had a heart to heart talk with Shuhuan.

Misty Heart
Yiping wrote a letter to Shuhuan expressing how deep her love was for him. In her letter, she promised to wait for him at Da Shanghai the coming Saturday until he turns up. When the letter reached Shuhuan's office, it was mixed up with other letters from readers. Shuhuan did not read it. Erhao and Dufei questioned Shuhuan if he was using Ruping to nurse his sorrows. Dufei felt Shuhuan still had feelings for Yiping. Devastated, Shuhuan volunteered to be a war reporter. Yiping waited the whole night at Da Shanghai but Shuhuan did not show up. While Shuhuan was in Sui Yuan, Yiping went back to Da Shanghai to sing. She sang "Misty Rain"(mandarin tittle:Yan Yu Meng Meng). Ruping begged Dufei to bring her to Sui Yuan to look for Shuhuan but Dufei refused. Ruping promised to marry him if he would take her there. Dufei finally agreed but would not force her into marriage. Yiping visited Keyun and shared with Keyun how she waited for the newspaper daily to read Shuhuan's report on the war. Each time when she read his article, she was assured that he was well and alive. Her heart would ache at every thought of him. Ruping and Dufei met with a few mishaps on their way to Sui Yuan.

Suiyuan
Ruping met a robber who tried to cheat her of her money after she was separated with Dufei. Dufei suffered a lot of hardship before meeting Ruping again. Yiping continued her singing at Da Shanghai (Yu Zhong De Gu Shi) while Shuhuan worked in the war fields. One month after Shuhuan had left, Yiping waited for his letter everyday but in vain. One day, Yiping visited Fangyu. She expressed she was willing to jump off the cliff to prove her love for Shuhuan if that was what he wanted. She was a porcupine. Her spikes were meant to protect her from harm. As Shuhuan did not like her spikes, she had to pluck her spikes. Without her spikes and Shuhuan, she was in great pain and could not survive. Both Yiping and Fangyu broke into tears. The Chinese army helped Dufei and Ruping to reach the war field where Shuhuan was. Finally they were united. Shuhuan was shocked and touched by her appearance. They left Sui Yuan and headed back to Shanghai's Lu Family to inform Ruping's family of their engagement.

I Will Attend Their Engagement Party
Zhenhua questioned Shuhuan of his fickle mindedness. Erhao and Mengping warned Ruping to think twice about engaging with Shuhuan. It was raining again. Yiping dreamed of Shuhuan's return from Sui Yuan. She went to the back street to look for him but was disappointed that it was only a dream. Erhao was angry with Dufei for taking Ruping to Sui Yuan. Erhao told Fangyu about Shuhuan's return and agreed that Shuhuan had to inform Yiping himself. Zhenhua informed Yiping about Shuhuan's engagement with Ruping. At that moment, Shuhuan came to Yiping's house too. Yiping accepted it calmly. The next morning, she was not her usual self. She told Keyun that men were unworthy and revealed that Erhao had found another girlfriend. Fangyu tried asking Shuhuan to read Yiping's diary again. Shuhuan was caught in a dilemma. He was tempted to read the dairy but was afraid he might change his mind. In Ruping's interest, Dufei locked up Yiping's diary. He promised to let Shuhuan have it back after the engagement. Yiping was determined to attend Shuhuan and Ruping's engagement party. Yiping asked her mother to choose a suitable cheongsam for her to attend the engagement party. Wenpei tried to stop her but Yiping explained that she needed to go to the party so that both Shuhuan and herself can overcome the lost love.

Engagement Party
During the engagement party, everyone was speechless when Yiping arrived. She requested Shuhuan for an introduction to his parents. As she did not bring any gifts for the couple, she sang a song "Joyful,Joyful"(mandarin tittle:Huan Le Song) to congratulate them. She broke down after the song and left the party after taking two cups of liquor. Shuhuan and others followed her to the door. After she left, Shuhuan chased after Yiping but was stopped by DuFei and Erhao. Yiping was nearly knocked down by a car when she jumped off Li Fuguan's trishaw. (Yiping wanted to go to Xi Du Bridge to see the sunset but was refused by Li Fuguan.) Finally Li Fuguan relented. Shuhuan hopped on to a bicycle and went after them. Yiping reached Xi Du Bridge and she climbed up the iron bars of the bridge. Shuhuan tried persuading her to come down but she could not recognize Shuhuan. Yiping's shoe fell into the river and as she stretched forward, she fell into the river. Shuhuan jumped into the river to save her. When she was saved, her breathing was very weak. At Lu Family, Ruping was very sad about Shuhuan's leaving. However, she knew that even if they were engaged, he would still love Yiping. Fangyu wanted to visit Yiping was and Ruping wanted to look for Shuhuan. Both of them went to Yiping's house. Shuhuan brought Yiping home and she was very ill. Ruping ran home to inform Zhenhua.

I Love You
Zhenhua arrived at Yiping's bedside and learned from the doctor that Yiping had to be sent to the hospital. Fangyu told Ruping that Yiping's life would be endangered if her fever did not subside. Ruping gave the whole matter much thought and changed out of her engagement gown. Dufei accompanied Ruping to church to pray for Yiping. They went to the hospital to visit Yiping. At the hospital, Shuhuan confessed to Yiping that he left her, as he could not tolerate the thought of her not loving him. Ruping witnessed the touching scene and decided to retreat from the triangular love affair. Yiping's heart nearly stopped and the doctors rushed to save her. Shuhuan broke down and everyone was devastated. After much struggle, Yiping's heartbeat strengthened. Ruping left and Dufei tried to cheer her up. Shuhuan asked Fangyu to help him explain to his parents about his love for Yiping and to obtain Yiping's diary and letter for him. He wanted to finish reading.

Reconcile
At Lu Family, Dufei defended Ruping from Xueqin's beating. Xueqin threatened to go to the hospital to create trouble but was stopped by Ruping. Fangyu called Dufei and asked him to bring Yiping's diary to Shuhuan. Shuhuan was very touched when he read Yiping's letter and diary. As Yiping's condition improved, Erhao and Fangyu were leaving the hospital. They met Li Fuguan and his family at the hospital grounds. Keyun became a little unstable when she met Erhao. Fangyu felt guilty and wanted Erhao to give her up and accept Keyun. After 4 days, Yiping finally woke up from coma. Initially, Yiping refused to forgive Shuhuan and asked him to leave. But Shuhuan remembered that Yiping used to say that every time she asked him to leave, it was against her wishes. Shuhuan said that he could hear that deep down in her heart she wanted him to stay. Yiping was moved and they finally reconciled. Shuhuan felt guilty towards Ruping and asked to see her.

Shuhuan and Ruping met in the park. Ruping has forgiven Shuhuan and henceforth would only regard him as her brother-in-law. Zhenhua, Wenpei and Shuhuan fetched Yiping from the hospital. Shuhuan insisted that he carried Yiping home. Li Fuguan and family helped Wenpei cleaned up the house. Dufei, Erhao and Fangyu were in Yiping's house to celebrate Yiping's 20th birthday. Yiping was speechless. Zhenhua gave Yiping a piano for her birthday. She played the piano and everyone sang "Long long ago"(mandarin tittle:Wang Shi Nan Wang). Ruping came. Yiping was touched by Ruping's forgiveness and Ruping joined in the singing. Ruping summed up her courage and returned to school. Dufei accompanied her but her classmates gossiped behind her back. She was embarrassed and ran off. She decided to quit school. Ruping decided to join Red Cross. Shuhuan informed Yiping that Ruping had withdrawn from school. Yiping felt that Shuhuan still had feelings for Ruping. Shuhuan explained that he just felt guilty for making her suffer. Yiping wanted Shuhuan to go back to Ruping but Shuhuan refused. Dufei volunteered to be a patient with Red Cross for Ruping's training class. Dufei brought much laughter when he was acting as the patient. Zhenhua wanted to buy a house to live with Wenpei, Yiping, Li Fuguan and his family. Li Fuguan volunteered to look for the house. Xueqin found out that her lover; Wei Guangxiong had another woman, Anna. Xueqin left Guangxiong's house in anger and she flew into a rage when she discovered that her husband, Zhenhua was planning to build another house to live with Wenpei and Yiping.

Retribution
Li Fuguan informed Wenpei that he had found the ideal house for them. Yiping was pleasantly surprised. Xueqin arrived and created a scene. Unable to put up with Xueqin's nonsense, Yiping revealed Xueqin's secret love affair. Zhenhua was at the entrance of the house and heard every word. He dragged Xueqin home. Shuhuan informed Erhao to rush home immediately. When Erhao reached home, Zhenhua was questioning her on Erjie's true father. Initially, Xueqin refused to admit but revealed the truth after Zhenhua's grilling. Xueqin and Erjie were locked up in a cellar. Zhenhua warned everyone, including the maids, that no food and water were to be given to both Xueqin and Erjie. Erhao, Ruping and Mengping realized that their mother has cheated on Zhenhua and Erjie was not their real brother. Yiping and Shuhuan came to Lu Family. Zhenhua asked Yiping for Wei Guangxiong's information. Yiping did not reveal too much as she was afraid that Zhenhua might look him up and endanger his life. Zhenhua wanted to starve both Xueqin and Erjie to death. Yiping begged Zhenhua to let Xueqin and Erjie go, as she wanted nothing to happen to Zhenhua. Zhenhua took out his gun and wanted to kill Xueqin but Yiping, Ruping, Mengping, Erhao, Dufei and Shuhuan went down on their knees to beg Zhenhua not to kill Xueqin. In the meantime, Xueqin was shouting from the cellar and hurled insults at Zhenhua.

Xueqin's Dirty Secret
Zhenhua blamed Li Fuguan for not telling him the truth earlier. Li Fuguan said he did not have any substantial evidence. Zhenhua wanted to find Wei Guangxiong. Xueqin asked Ruping to help her by informing Wei Guangxiong to save her and Erjie. Shuhuan asked Erhao to follow his father and at the same time, inform Shuhuan and Yiping of Zhenhua's whereabouts. They would then delay him from going home. At the same time, Ruping and Mengping would hire a locksmith to open the lock and release their mother. Shuhuan asked Dufei to help Ruping and Mengping to get a locksmith. The following night, Zhenhua was planning to go to Li Fuguan's house and Shuhuan and Yiping appeared as planned. Wenpei came along to persuade Zhenhua. Under their persuasion, Zhenhua finally handed over the keys to Yiping, Erhao and Shuhuan.
Episode 43 • Apr 29, 2001
Safe
The locksmith could not open the locks. Ruping brought along some strangers (Wei Guangxiong's men) to open the locks. Before Xueqin left, she hugged Ruping and Mengping and advised Ruping to marry Dufei. At the same time, Wei Guangxiong's men were in the Study Room trying to open Zhenhua's safe. Dufei heard noises and went to check out the noise from the Study Room. He tried to fight with them but was knocked unconscious. When Yiping, Erhao and Shuhuan reached Lu Family, they were shocked to see the Study Room being ransacked. They woke Dufei up and nursed his injury. When Zhenhua returned, he was very angry with Ruping for letting Wei Guangxiong's men into the house. Ruping ran to her room and Dufei followed her to her room to comfort her. Ruping left a letter and ran away from home. Shuhuan, Dufei and Erhao were informed that war had broken in Lu Ku Bridge. Utterly disappointed with her mother's heartlessness, Ruping left home. Initially, Ruping wanted to commit suicide but because of the erupting war, she joined in the battlefield as a nurse. Yiping divided her savings into 3 portions; one for Li Fuguan, Zhenhua and one for Wenpei. She told her mother that she would go back to Da Shanghai to work.
Episode 44 • Apr 30, 2001
Aggression
The next morning, Fangyu wanted to comfort Ruping but Mengping found Ruping's farewell letter. Yiping also arrived and helped to search for Ruping's belongings. They discovered that she took nothing except for Zhenhua's gun. All of them prepared notices and wrote flyers to plead for Ruping to return. Yiping and Shuhuan agreed that they would not marry until Ruping returned. If Ruping was dead, they would not remain together. But if they Ruping could be found, Shuhuan assured Yiping he would not leave her.ng, Shuhuan and Erhao gave Dufei a lot of advice before he left. A few days later, the Japanese invaded Shanghai. They bombarded the area where Yiping and Li Fuguan were staying. Erhao, Shuhuan and Zhenhua went in a car to fetch Yiping and Li Fuguan. They went on separate ways, Erhao to save Li Fuguan and family, whilst Shuhuan and Zhenhua went to save Yiping and Wenpei. After much struggle. Dufei volunteered as a war reporter. Fangyu and Yiping helped Dufei pack his luggage. Fangyu, Yipi, Shuhuan found Yiping and Wenpei.

Pingping
Erhao saved Li Fuguan's family out of the war zone but on their way home, Keyun picked up a baby whose mother was shot by the Japanese soldiers. Shuhuan, Yiping and Wenpei went in search for Zhenhua. Zhenhua witnessed the Japanese attacking Chinese. Zhenhua killed all the Japanese soldiers with a gun but was also seriously injured. Shuhuan carried him back to Lu Family. The doctor could not save Zhenhua and passed away. On the day of his burial, Li Fuguan related Zhenhua's first love, Ping Ping whom he met when he was 17 years old.
Episode 46 • May 01, 2001
Railway
Li Fuguan continued relating Zhenhua's story. All his wives shared a little resemblance of Ping Ping. As Ping Ping looked gorgeous with a red riding costume, all his wives wore red riding costume when they married him. Zhenhua loved Xinping, Yiping's dead sister, as she resembled Ping Ping the most. Yiping finally realized her father was sentimental. Mengping was sad that she had lost her father, mother and Ruping. Yiping asked Mengping to treat her as her own sister henceforth. Fangyu visited the Lu Family to inform them that she wanted to become a nun. Keyun claimed that she has fully recovered from her illness and she was happy to have the baby whom she named Chongshen(Reborn). She no longer wanted to marry Erhao. Yiping and Erhao dissuaded Fangyu from becoming a nun and Fangyu agreed. There was a bombing at the Shanghai Railway. Erhao and Shuhuan visited the bomb-site to report on the situation. Erhao and Shuhuan witnessed the devastating sight and resolved to join the army. Shuhuan explained to Yiping that he wanted to serve the country. Yiping assured him that she would be fine without him by her side. She promised to protect herself and the family and would support the family by singing at Da Shanghai. They had their fourth kiss. She promised to write to him daily like she used to write her diary. Shuhuan and Erhao set off. On Yiping's first night of performance, the Japanese dashed into Da Shanghai to track two Chinese but she helped them to disguise as dancers.

Orphans' Home
Yiping successfully helped two Chinese escaped from the Japanese. Yiping sang "The Station of Separation"(mandarin tittle: Li Bie De Che Zhan). Keyun, Mengping, Fangyu and Yiping helped to look after orphans. Yiping agreed to let Keyun and Mengping bring the sick and weaker orphans home. Xueqin and Erjie were ill treated by Wei Guangxiong. Xueqin discovered that Guangxiong had robbed Zhenhua's safe deposit box the same day he saved her. Guangxiong and Annie were arrested for trading in illegal trades.

Happy Wedding
Xueqin and Wei Guangxiong were arrested. Qin Wuye showed Yiping the news on their arrest. Yiping realized that Qin Wuye was responsible for plotting their arrest in revenge for Yiping and her family. Yiping requested for Qin Wuye's help to find Erjie. Erjie was found one year later. Dufei was working as a war reporter. One day, he met Zhang and found out from him that Ruping was alive and was serving at a nearby hospital. Dufei was overjoyed and he rushed to see her. Ruping was so glad to see him too. Dufei and Ruping related to each other the happenings all these years. From then on, Dufei stayed and interviewed the injured soldiers in the hospital. A fight broke up and Ruping and her team were sent to the war field to save soldiers. Dufei followed and was injured by a gun. An operation had to be performed on his leg to remove the bullet. As they had ran out of anesthesia, Ruping gave him a passionate kiss to relieve Dufei of his pain. That night, Ruping repeatedly checked on him and recalled all that had happened. When Dufei woke up, she told him that she had come to realize her love for him. In the past, she was miserable as she kept chasing for something that she could never call her own. Dufei has to be sent to another well-equipped hospital to get his leg cured. Ruping agreed to marry Dufei when he returned. The villagers prepared a grand wedding for Ruping and Dufei. Dufei forgot his wedding rings and as usual, he created a scene while trying to collect the wedding rings. Ruping had to ride a horse to rescue him.

The Station
At the wedding, Dufei could not find his wedding rings as he had dropped them during his fight with the robbers. An old couple volunteered to give them their wedding rings. They were a loving couple that had married for more than 50 years. Yiping and others were very happy to receive Ruping's letters and her wedding photos. A few years had passed; Shuhuan kept reading the same old letters from Yiping as her last letter came six months ago. During a Japanese bombing, Shuhuan was seriously injured. Shuhuan was sent to the hospital. Before he left, he told Erhao to convey to Yiping his love for her. The war has ended after 8 years. The whole family turned up at the train station to receive Shuhuan and Erhao but only Erhao returned. Yiping was very sad. Yiping learned that Shuhuan was seriously injured but did not know if he was still alive. Erhao conveyed Shuhuan's message that he loved her and handed to Yiping the letters she had sent him. From then on, Yiping waited for every train that arrived at the station. Finally one day, Shuhuan came home and they were united. Shuhuan told Yiping that he loved her ten thousand times. Yiping gave Shuhuan another long passionate kiss (fifth kiss).
