Mysterious Manta Ray

One of the ocean's most awe-inspiring creatures is the Manta Ray but, they are stealthy creatures and not much is known about them - where they go or what they do. In this first episode of the Ocean Mysteries series, host Jeff Corwin joins Dr. Tim Mullican, the VP of Veterinary Services and Husbandry at Georgia Aquarium as he attempts to place satellite-tracking tags on 10 manta rays. Once attached to the tough Manta hide, this groundbreaking satellite technology will provide valuable data that will help Dr. Tim and other scientist's track the manta's migratory patterns. But the task isn't easy. Dr. Tim must place the tags while lying on the deck of a small boat that stalks the twisting, turning Mantas as they "fly" through the water.

From there Jeff travels to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to track migrating sharks in the wild.

Host Jeff Corwin teams up with NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and divers from Georgia Aquarium as they dive deep - 120 feet deep - into the stormy waters off Savannah Georgia in the effort to capture and/or eradicate lionfish - an animal with no natural predator outside the Indo-Pacific area that is it's natural home. Released into the waters off the US East Coast by unsatisfied pet owners and the destruction of an aquarium by hurricane Andrew, the unabated proliferation of lionfish threatens life on and around the local coral reefs. What's more, Lionfish are a formidable adversary as their venomous tentacles are loaded with a toxin whose potency makes the fish an excellent predator and dangerous to fishermen and divers.
