Working as a secretary for a legal office, Xiaofen records clients detailing the sordid aspects of their lives: divorce cases, medical malpractice suits, financial corruption and old-fashioned personal revenge. Xiaofen starts to question her own relationship with her boyfriend (Deng Gang), fresh out of prison and looking to get into trouble again with his gambling habit. While Xiaofen deals with the overwhelming social malaise surrounding her, rumors spread of a disaster at the local chemical plant, threatening to poison the entire city.

Gerardo Roquer's father sends his son, who is much more interested in nightlife and vaudeville chorus girls than in textbooks, from Madrid to the University of Santiago de Compostela to force him to study. Gerardo ends up staying at the "Casa de la Troya" boardinghouse, where he befriends other students and falls in love with the beautiful Carmiña Castro. But her aunt and uncle don't approve of their love; they prefer the foppish Octavio (to whom they owe a debt).

Up his own arse film maker Jerome Gold is working on his latest film, a high class art house epic... at least in his head. Reality however proves to be less picturesque.

The play deals with marital cohabitation and child rearing. With aggressive and excessive comedy, it is suggested that many people stick with wife and children, status and social standards, but that they have long since disappeared from themselves.
