Summary The action takes place in Western Belarus during the first post-war summer. The war is over, but peace hasn't set in yet on this territory. The natives, who were good neighbors not so long ago, becomes enemies. A cadet of Suvorov Military School, Denis Meshko, comes on a holiday to this village and learns that his uncle Stepan Meshko, the first chairman of the village administration, is murdered.
