Wijk aan Zee

Tue, Sep 07, 2021
If you look west from Wijk aan Zee, you see an oasis for surfers, beach walkers and sun lovers. Those who then look behind them see a gigantic hulk rising up: the steel mill casting its shadow over life in the small community. Where once the village and the factory formed a solid and inevitable unity, over the years the unrest and discord about the polluting aspects of the steel industry has increased. Will there actually be a place for the plant in the future? Kefah Allush goes in search of the sunny sides and the shady sides of this special oasis on the Dutch coast.

Vijlen

It is the only 'mountain village' in our country: the Limburg village of Vijlen. For centuries a close-knit, predominantly farming community. But Vijlen changes. The farmers disappear. The picturesque village has become a refuge for rest-seeking Randstad. And although Vijlen best benefits from the mostly wealthy newcomers, there is also much lost. Young people can no longer find an affordable house and move away. Associations get no new members. And the newcomers do not show up at the local militia. Kefah Allush goes to Vijlen in search of the past and future of this Limburg oasis.

Vlieland

There are still a few hundred real, original Vlielanders living on the island. The rest are imports, have a second home there or temporarily live in a holiday home. Vlieland has become everyone's and therefore actually no one's anymore. At least, that is how the real Vlielanders increasingly feel. Tourism continues twelve months a year. There is never a moment when the island is theirs for a while. Kefah Allush goes in search of the appeal of this oasis for the original, the new and the temporary residents.

Kranenburg

For cheaper petrol and groceries, the Dutch have been crossing the border with Germany for some time now, but they are also increasingly moving there to live. In and around the German Kranenburg, just across the border from Nijmegen, true Dutch enclaves are emerging. Not all Germans are happy with the Dutch invasion, because although the Dutch live (cheaply) in Germany, they actually still live in the Netherlands: that is where they work, go out to eat and have their friends. Kefah Allush goes in search of the deep-rooted identity of these oases in the border region and in doing so comes across a surprising past.

Oostende

In the old Vuurtorenwijk in the Belgian Ostend, almost nothing is as it used to be. The district that was the domain of hard-working fishing families for decades has now become an oasis for the Flemish high society: rich baby boomers who lock themselves up in sky-high, ultra-luxury apartments. For them, the seawater is not good enough. They prefer to swim in their own pool. The old residents of the Vuurtorenwijk see how the 'washed up', as they call the newcomers, are making their old familiar district disappear. Kefah Allush searches the Vuurtorenwijk for the last remnants of a rich fishing past.
