Summary For cheaper petrol and groceries, the Dutch have been crossing the border with Germany for some time now, but they are also increasingly moving there to live. In and around the German Kranenburg, just across the border from Nijmegen, true Dutch enclaves are emerging. Not all Germans are happy with the Dutch invasion, because although the Dutch live (cheaply) in Germany, they actually still live in the Netherlands: that is where they work, go out to eat and have their friends. Kefah Allush goes in search of the deep-rooted identity of these oases in the border region and in doing so comes across a surprising past.
