S1.E1 ∙ The Mediterranean Feast

In the observational documentary, Green (2013), I used the direct cinema style to refamiliarize myself with my family who immigrated to the United States eight years before the time that I was able to start visiting them. As a result of this process of behavioral study through filmmaking, this documentary intimately portrays a phenomenology of Filipino-American experience as well as my personal perspective as an outsider looking in.

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Sandaoling Mines is the biggest open-pit coal mine in the Northwest region of China. Most workers at the Sandaoling Mines are second generation miners. Their fathers' generation were called there by the Chinese government to support the border's Big Northwest Constructions, which began in 1958 with the mining expanding from the Northeast of China to Inner Mongolia, then to the Sandaoling Mines. Xuan Jian was born in Sandaoling in 1967. As a second generation miner, his life led him like train tracks straight into the mines after graduation; he worked in the vicious environment of the steam train for thirty years. As the resources gradually dried up, the Chinese government announced the closing of the Sandaoling Mines in 2020. Xuan Jian and the steam trains will all become just a part of history. The third generation of the miners have already moved toward the city, the town will in the end, be gone like the steam.

This tale produced by Lois Cook and her family very intimately shares the brutal, mostly untold history of what happened to the Nyangbul people of the NSW North Coast. You will be surprised at what Lois finds when she becomes history detective tracking down people and documents to see if the family's oral history is supported by other accounts from the 19th century. With the help of the staff of Ballina Library she discovers commentary by settlers and historians who were compelled to record the brutality against the local Indigenous people. This video was created by Lois Cook and her family in an unique collaboration with ABC Multiplatform Executive Producer, Catherine Marciniak, in a series of video production workshops.

She is waiting for him and not losing hope for his release. The film tells us about a female power and submissiveness of a wife to her husband and to God. The message of the film also concerns hardships and praise to God, resignation of a woman who is destined to be a Wife.
