Summary The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Sandaoling Mines is the biggest open-pit coal mine in the Northwest region of China. Most workers at the Sandaoling Mines are second generation miners. Their fathers' generation were called there by the Chinese government to support the border's Big Northwest Constructions, which began in 1958 with the mining expanding from the Northeast of China to Inner Mongolia, then to the Sandaoling Mines. Xuan Jian was born in Sandaoling in 1967. As a second generation miner, his life led him like train tracks straight into the mines after graduation; he worked in the vicious environment of the steam train for thirty years. As the resources gradually dried up, the Chinese government announced the closing of the Sandaoling Mines in 2020. Xuan Jian and the steam trains will all become just a part of history.
