S4.E11 ∙ Will the Real Dr. Howser Please Stand Up

A dancer who has just gotten engaged to her partner and choreographer and is about to embark on a major career is devastated to learn that she has contracted polio.

Married couples unable to conceive are thrilled to find they are going to become parents, thanks to a larger-than-life "miracle doctor" and his unusual treatments. However, joy soon turns to outrage with the discovery that the physician has taken bizarre and inconceivably unethical means to deceive his patients. In some case, the doctor deliberately misled couples into falsely believing they might have a chance to become pregnant when they could not. In others, the twisted physician actually served as a "secret donor," fathering countless children himself. Outraged by these shocking discoveries, one couple leads a seemingly impossible fight to keep hopeful families from being victimized again.

Dr. James Kildare has just completed his internship at Blair General Hospital and is assigned to work with his mentor, Dr. Leonard Gillespie. But fearing for the health of his father, Dr. Stephen Kildare, he returns to his parents home to help him with his excessive workload. Dr. Kildaire Sr. is servicing a wide area ever since the doctors in neighboring towns moved elsewhere. Noting that three doctors at Blair General are doing menial jobs because they can't start their own practices, Kildare conceives the idea of building a clinic in Parkersville to be serviced by the three doctors and financed by the townsfolk paying ten cents a week to subscribe to the service. But influential men in Parkersville provide serious opposition to the plan.

An intern (Michael Sarrazin) and his literary lover (Jacqueline Bisset) are consumed by their addictions to the drug called speed, methamphetamine.
