Tom visits the huge Californian metropolis, the capital of (Hollywood) dreams. Few make it into the boulevard as literal star, half the city's service jobs like waiters are filled by aspiring actors, like a Beverly Hills dog-walker who shows Tom around among lavish villas like celebrities own. That extravagance contrasts with the misery of growing homeless masses, often living in cars, some indebted despite good jobs, even a graduated lawyer who got in trouble as junkie. Voluntary outsiders he finds in a maverick artist community without any active intervention by the authorities. Finally he enjoys the bizarre bouncing cars lovingly created as a local tradition.
