While treasure hunting in Cambodia, Anna Young receives a dire warning from a ghost. Back in the US, Professor Andrews receives a visit from a colleague, also warning about the release of an ancient demon trapped in a lost idol.
After dreams about past adventures, Jackson Carter happens across a Tibetan phurba in an old box of family items. Somehow, a gun wielding thief immediately arrives to fight him for it. Meanwhile, the wand of Al-Ahmar is discovered by a janitor cleaning the college offices.
Jackson visits Professor Lawrence and learns of his family connection to Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of King Tut. However, the missing wand of Al-Ahmar draws Jackson into the quest, and he must enlist help to find his stolen family phurba.

Jackson finally obtains the Wand of Al-Ahmar, after it travels between his friends and enemies. Theo also continues to make the rounds tracking the wand, with additional deadly results. His confrontation with Sholto, however, leads to an epic battle.
Using the Wand of Al-Ahmar, Jackson travels to the lost island, deep in the Pacific. Once there, he finds a magic pool and must confront the pool's guardian, a mermaid. She claims to be protecting the dangerous idol, and Jackson must convince her to release it to him.
Having found the idol, Jackson comes face to face with the demon Al-Ahmar. Al-Ahmar tempts Jackson into releasing him from the idol by presenting himself as various characters, good and bad, from Jackson's past and revealing his deepest secrets.
Jackson's confrontation with the demon is interrupted by the arrival of his thief, and Jackson discovers it is his long time friend, Connor Reed, who stole his phurba. Much to the demons delight, Jackson's rage makes him more and more blind to what is truly going on.
