Grijpstra and De Gier re-investigate a case from 12 years ago when one of its prime witnesses is found murdered, having died 12 years ago. Grijpstra quickly realizes that the man who was arrested by him at the time, and convicted for the murder, is innocent. The police station staff is assessed by a female inspector, who immediately gets De Gier's attention.

After an illegal African is arrested for breaking into a pharmacy, he dies in jail. Grijpstra and De Gier investigate, and an autopsy reveals that the man died of complications following the surgical removal of a kidney. Grijpstra and De Gier suspect they are dealing with an organ dealing network.

In 1987 the chief led his first case as head inspector, searching for a missing young woman. However, she was never found. Two months before the case is exactly 20 years ago, which would make it too old to lead to a conviction if the murderer were found, the chief asks Grijpstra and De Gier to re-investigate. He also calls in a psychic who successfully locates the body. DNA traces of the murderer are found, and the chief is eager to acquire a DNA sample from Jack Ebbits, who was the prime suspects at the time. Ebbits is not very eager to participate, however. Grijpstra recognizes another suspect as a member of a mob who beat him up during the crowning of Queen Beatrix on April 30, 1980, when he was just a rookie.

A man who was hit by a car turns out to be a Russian hit-man. Grijpstra and De Gier find the address of his target in his pocket- it is the family of a known criminal. They try to find out who hired the hit-man before the family is targeted again. Grijpstra is especially worried about the 13-year-old son, who was ordered by his father to protect his mother. Grijpstra is also having trouble with his wife, giving him a foul mood. Puk finds him drunk in Fred's café, and he kisses her when she brings him home.

A man comes to the police station with a bomb strapped to himself, threatening to destroy the station unless he can talk to Grijpstra, whose brusque interrogation methods apparently brought him to confessing the murder on his wife, although he didn't commit it. Grijpstra, however, has the weekend off and has lost himself around the German border after a fight with his wife in which she drove off without him.

Grijpstra goes after a shady night club owner after undergoing an embarrassing side effect from taking a Viagra pill he bought from him. When the man's bodyguard is found poisoned Grijpstra realizes how lucky he has been. De Gier has slept with Elisa van Landzaat, and they get closer when she visits him again.

A befriended informant tips Grijpstra about a weapon used for eight executions. Grijpstra tries to catch the owner red-handed, and fiercely goes after him when the informant is found murdered. He is also drinking a lot and gets into trouble when a suspect's lawyer finds out, after which an investigation is launched. De Gier amicably splits up with Elise. A frustrated Grijpstra announces that he is going to request a transfer.

Grijpstra and De Gier investigate the murder on a judge and discover that he was about to expose a corrupted colleague. The victim is a friend of Elise's father, bringing her back into De Gier's life. Grijpstra's wife wants to divorce, and there is still tension between Grijpstra and Puk.
