Georg's widow Sonja and brother Peter lie about ignoring what any of them had to do with clearly relevant Stasi file IM Gründgens. Henrik Mertens goes undercover, following up on an informer tip find Katrin Stoll, thus meets her brother's escaped murdered Jürgen Zoch and finds the tables sort of turned on him and his ex.

The corpse of former GDR-swimmer and Olympic coach Manfred Schmidt, missing since 11 Juli 2008, is found. Obvious 'illegal' doping-suspicions are confirmed by his remarried then wife Beate Berger, former athlete Inga Thalheim and Beate's second husband Wilfried Berger who works for the medical insurance, where the delicate problem of Inga's wheelchair)stuck son Philipp provides a new angle to the case. Henrik Mertens can't concentrate on the case, worrying he can't raise the huge ransom demanded by escaped murdered Jürgen Zoch for abducted Katrin Stoll , and the fiend clearly has an inside source to spy on him.

Strewn bones are found belonging to ruthless SS-officer Alfred Döberitz, missing since 2002, wrongly assumed to have returned to his South American hiding pace. State attorney Brehm showed exceptional zeal to prosecute him, barrister Erich Fehling to assure his defense, in the matter of a 1944 bloodbath among civilians in Nazi-occupied Italy. Forensic doc Julia Löwe, who is fluent in Italian, travels to the intended key witness, sole survivor Anna Rivolta, who is far from cooperative. Henrik Mertens, still looking for the mole in his team, also grills her adult grandson in Berlin, Franco Rivolta, and Döberitz's surviving subaltern Erich Fehling. Löwe learns about Mertens despair to raise the ransom for Dr. Katrin Stoll and volunteers to stay on as her replacement, now indefinitely.

A corpse in Berlin, stabbed with an unusual blade, is painstakingly identified as Khaled Qaderi, an Afghan translator for the NATO police training mission in Kundus when Henrik Mertens was an instructor/ According to daughter Aryana he's missing since 2014. Former soldier Thomas Bauer and reporter Bela Neumann become suspects, or Khaled may have been 'executed as alleged traitor. To pay Katrin Stoll's kidnapper Zoch's huge ransom, Henrik involves teammates Bach and Dr. Julia Löwe in an elaborate plan to use forged cash from the evidence room.

The bones -near a badger burrow- of priest-teacher Pater Wolfram, missing since a 2010 pupil abuse scandal in a Berlin Catholic boarding school, prove he was beaten to death. Henrik Mertens painstakingly finds out, despite secrecy among staff and former victims, that David Pecker, Max Sobota and father Thiel where involved, plus matron Daniela Krahl, a victim's sister. Tom Bach is not amused to find out Henrik Mertens and Julia Löwe manipulated him to steal counterfeit ransom for Dr. Katrin Stoll's abductor Zoch but helps identify the mole and set a trap for ex-GDR colleague Maria Kaschke.

Fatally shot private banker Johannes Rathmann's corpse is found in the woods. He was missing since the 2008 stock exchange crash, but wife Susanne and daughter Svenja assumed suicide given his terminal cancer. Contrary to his reputation as conservative safe investment banker, executive and candidate son in law Felix Franzen and fired employee Sebastian Voss took risky positions, wiping out the fortune of clients like lover Constanze von Herndorf, who was later fully reimbursed to rebuild the bank's reputation. Hendrik and his conspirators come clean to the whole team, worrying if Dr. Katrin Stoll will be released by kidnapper Jürgen Zoch or if the counterfeit money will be spotted and/or his blackmailed mole Maria Kaschke being found out.

The Specialists officially investigate a 'wax corpse', an 'inverse mummy' which result not from oxygen deprivation but from immersion. Ferdinand Wagner, the new chief of the whole LKA (state prosecution department), who intends to close the expensive 'cold case unit'. While the section captain deals with him, the team detectives focus on the payment of the counterfeit ransom for Katrin Stoll to Jürgen Zoch. But the fiend got wind of his turned mole and prepared a spectacular diversion, with a trap corpse, so several team members find themselves in unexpected physical danger and Henrik must improvise quickly.
