When Lydia panics, Zober and Barton decide to abandon her and go meet "Mr. Darrell", the prospective buyer of the gems. When Lydia realizes she has been duped and abandoned, she tells Dan all she knows. The information enables Dan and his officers to trap "Mr. Darrell" at a roadblock. They quickly locate Zober and Barton as well, and an armed confrontation ensues with Rita perilously near the line of fire.

However, they arrive after he has already assaulted Norpel, knocked him unconscious, and is about to set the barn ablaze with Norpel still in it. Sergeant Williams distracts Patterson while Dan Mathews overpowers him, but the barn is set afire in the scuffle. The two Highway Patrol officers have only seconds to rescue Norpel and extinguish the blaze.
