Once a hero, Firefighter Alphonse Sicignano is now fighting to survive. Like many who worked at Ground Zero, Al faces mental and physical ailments. But when he tests positive for cocaine while on duty, his whole world crashes down around him. Engulfed in a lawsuit with New York City and struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, Al is on the brink of losing his career, his wife and his two daughters. As the story evolves from 2001 to the present, his wife Suzanne is left picking up the pieces.
