Deadline

The paper tells Gary that a man , named Ricky Brown is going to be executed tomorrow. Gary learns that the previous recipient of the paper, Lucious Snow tried to help Brown but couldn't and spent the rest of his life trying to prove his innocence. Gary goes to the prison to talk to him but couldn't. But Molly Greene who is there to interview Brown allows Gary to go with her. They talk to Brown who says he was working at this company and he met a woman working there and fell for her. What he didn't know is that she's the owner and her brother had issues with their dating. Brown tried to talk to him but when Brown went to see him he found him dead. That's when he was arrested. When Gary tells Brown that he's there because of Lucious, Brown remembers him and Molly is intrigued. Molly later learns that something strange happened at the company around the time of the murder. So they go to the sister to ask what she knows.

When Gary interrupts a federal investigation by trying to save a towel boy from being shot, he is placed in the Witness Protection Program. He is assigned an attractive but surly agent to watch over him, which puts off Erica, whom he just got the courage to ask out.

Gary's mom comes for a visit and is vague about why she came. He later sees her with another man and jumps to conclusions, later learning that the man convinced her to invest all of her money with him and so far has not seen any return. It's obvious that the guy is a con man and they can't do anything about it. Later when the paper says that the man's going to be shot by a woman from Indiana, Gary assumes it's his mom but discovers it's another of his victims, who gives them a list of other victims. And together they decide to get back what he took from them. Along with Erica, Gary comes up with a plan.

Gary begins to experience medical problems stemming from his frequent lying to Erica about his whereabouts. He decides to come clean and tell her about the newspaper and his heroic acts. However, she has a tough time believing him after his paper gets switched with Patrick's copy of today's paper.

Funny Valentine
Gary saves baseball player Andy Miller from sustaining a ending career injury. His agent wants to make sure he's OK, so he wants to take him to an orthopedic doctor whom Gary had earlier encountered, so they drag Gary along. On the way to the hospital Gary wonders if he'll play in Chicago. But the agent who's prime concern is the best offer (which is not Chicago) tells him not to hold his breath. When they arrive at the hospital, the doctor is not available so Gary asks another doctor, Suzy Pietro, who's also an orthopedist to check Andy out. And upon meeting there's an attraction between them. The next day, which is also Valentine's Day, the paper says that Miller will play in Chicago. And Gary, promises Erica that he'll spend the day with her and, upon seeing nothing in the paper he is able to do so. But Erica unwittingly tells Emmett, the cab driver Gary encountered earlier who's attracted to Marissa, that Miller will play for Chicago. He, in turn, picks up Miller's agent and tells him about Miller's plans and confronts Miller who says that it's because of Suzy Pietro that he wants to stay in Chicago. The agent goes to the hospital and runs into the doctor who treated Miller, who blurts out that Suzu is his fiancee, when in reality he proposed to her but she didn't accept. So he makes the doctor see Miller again and let's him talk about how he and Suzy are engaged. So later while Gary is with Erica, he notices the article about Miller changes stating that he is not going to play for Chicago. When Erica tells him about Emmett, so Gary talks to him who tells him about Miller's agent so they go to the hospital and confront Pietro who denies talking to Miller, but a nurse reveals that the doctor met with Miller and what he told him. That's when Suzy tells him she can't accept his proposal. So Gary races to catch Miller before he leaves.

Number One with a Bullet
C-Roc is a famous rapper whose career has begun to stall, so on his latest tour he includes a stop at his hometown to get a feel for his 'roots' again. Unbeknownst to Gary, Marissa grew up with C-Roc and is still angry with him for jilting her best friend Gayle Clark. Gayle and Marissa sing in a church choir and do not like the criminal undertones to C-Roc's music and videos, and when he sees how his music is negatively affecting Gayle's son Chris, he re-examines his life.

Crumb Again

The paper tells Gary that Crumb, who is now living in a cabin, will die because of an explosion at his cabin. Gary calls Crumb and gets him outside just before the explosion. Crumb later shows up and stays with Gary. Later more attempts are made on Crumb, that's when former U.S. Marshall Toni Brigatti who joined the Chicago P.D. shows up and wonders what's going on. At the same time a woman from Crumb's past shows up.

Gary finds himself quarantined when he comes in contact with an animal that could be a carrier. So he asks Marissa to take care of something in the paper so she asks her boyfriend Emmett to help. Eventually they come in contact with an old man who appears to be off his rocker. When his son tries to have him committed, Emmett, as a law student, tries to help him.

Gary saves a woman from drowning. Her husband is thankful and invites Gary to dinner at their home. The officer is suspicious since his wife was in a woman only swimming club. He thinks Gary is setting up situations to play the hero.
