Forfeit by Death
An ambitious young man working his way through law school (Jim Wayburn) who works for a bail bondswoman (Roxie Morgan), who just happens to be a friend of Barnaby, is tricked into securing the release on bond of a convict (Ross Kemper) in exchange for a promise of $200K. But it is all subterfuge and Kemper tricks Wayburn and bolts. Wayburn tracks him down and shoots him dead (after the other shoots first) and takes the loot Kemper had stolen and was on his person at the time of the shooting. Wayburn disposes of the body (although the audience is not shown how or where). Roxie asks Barnaby to find Kemper or she'll have to forfeit the bond. She does not blame Wayburn and is quite solicitous of him. Wayburn tries to fence the loot but Sven Rolly, Kemper's former partner in crime, whom he also cheated, wants his share.

Blueprint for a Caper
Clete Larkin, who works for an insurance company is beaten and thrown him down an elevator shaft by a disgruntled associate, sociopath Cam Wheeler, just out of prison "on a technicality". The police rule the incident an accident but Larkin's widow doesn't agree. She hires Barnaby Jones to investigate. Larkin had been providing a group of thieves with information on various clients so the gang could rob the clients. Wheeler, the newly-restored leader of the gang, believed Larkin was getting too close to Wheeler's girl (Gina Nelson), who is also a member of the gang. The tension between Wheeler and Gina is palpable. And there is dissension among the other gang members when Wheeler brings back the former way of dividing the take, under which he gets the lion's share. One of the other gang members, Doug Starrett, is outspoken in his belief that they've been doing all the work since he's been away and done well so they deserve a greater share. Wheeler doesn't agree.

A singer who hit it big goes back to her hometown to perform. She runs into her ex who is now dating someone else, and the girl he is dating is very insecure when the singer is with him. She confronts the singer, and the singer hits her knocking her out. Her manager who likes the singer tells her that she's dead but in actuality is not. He tells the singer to leave and he'll handle it, he wakes her up and he gets her out before anyone sees her. They talk and he wants her to pretend to be dead. The manager likes the singer and if can make the singer think she killed her, he can make her do whatever he wants. But she doesn't want to give the singer a chance to go after her ex so she tries to go back. But the manager runs her over. Her father then hires Barnaby to find out what happened to her.

Yvonne Gaspers, 37 Jahre alt und ledig, ist seit zehn Tagen verschwunden. Sie arbeitet als Steuerprüferin beim Finanzamt, auch dort wundert man sich, wo sie steckt. Ihre Schwester alarmiert die Polizei Mönchengladbach. Lee Sooyoung von der Vermisstenstelle nimmt sich der Meldung an. Überraschenderweise findet sie Ingo Thiels Visitenkarte in der Manteltasche der Vermissten. Sooyoung zögert nicht lange und ruft den Kollegen hinzu. Er kenne sie, sagt Thiel, aber nur flüchtig. Er sei mit Yvonne auf ein Date gegangen, es sei jedoch bei nur einem Treffen geblieben. Als Thiel in der Wohnung der Vermissten steht, bemerkt er einen flüchtigen, aber dennoch unverwechselbaren Geruch. Sofort ruft er die Spurensicherung hinzu. Und sein Instinkt trügt keineswegs: Hier wurde akribisch und mit Hilfe von Chemikalien geputzt. Für Thiel scheint klar, dass hier jemand die Spuren eines Verbrechens verwischt hat. Trotzdem: Ohne Leiche und entsprechende Indizien fehlen die Voraussetzungen, eine Ermittlungsgruppe zusammenzustellen. Das sehen auch Thiels Kollegen so und werfen ihm vor, in diesem Fall keine emotionale Distanz zu haben. Offensichtlich hat es mindestens ein Abendessen zwischen Thiel und der Vermissten gegeben. Sie haben das Gefühl, ihr Chef verheimliche ihnen etwas, und warnen ihn, sich nicht zu verrennen. Doch er lässt nicht locker, vielleicht ist Yvonne noch am Leben. Entgegen den Mahnungen seines Teams nimmt Thiel die Ermittlungen auf eigene Faust auf. Für ihn ist es längst ein Fall. Und zwar einer, der ihn bis ans Mittelmeer treibt, um Antworten zu finden.
