The Shinsengumi suffer heavy losses, but keep moving forward and working hard. Hijikata, despite Chizuru's protests, is no exception. However, now being a fury, the Vice Commander must also fight the monster within.
The Shinsengumi are on the brink of battle but morale and odds of success are low. Before leaving to get reinforcements, Hijikata recruits Chizuru as Kondou's bodyguard. Still and all, in the heat of battle, an unexpected relative appears.
While Sanosuke, Shinpachi, and Shiranui face an army of upgraded furies, Chizuru confronts a long-lost sibling and discovers the horrifying truth about her family. Still more tears her apart when two close friends leave the Shinsengumi.
After learning that the furies' possess a fatal flaw, those who drank the Water of Life are urged to restrain from using their powers. The Imperial army surrounds the Shinsengumi base and Commander Kondou makes a critical decision.
Chizuru and the injured Hijikata head to Aizu to regroup with the Shinsengumi. In the meantime, Sanosuke and Shiranui lay in wait to attack Koudou's starved fury army and Souji overhears a plot to kill Hijikata.
Hajime Saito, leading the Shinsengumi in place of Hijikata, joins with the captain Masaki and his Aizu soldiers. However, the two do not get along very well. The Imperial army advances, yet the lord of Aizu is stubborn.
After the Shinsengumi lose contact with Sannan and the Fury Corps, they receive strange reports from the Sendai domain. Chizuru is kidnapped and taken there where she learns the truth.
The war thickens. Amid meager victories and devastating defeats, Chizuru is determined to return to and remain at Hijikata's side. However, Kazama reveals to Chizuru his resolution to finish things with the former vice commander.
After battling against the Imperial army, Hijikata and the Bakafu receive dismaying news. The end is near, but Chizuru and Hijikata will not be separated. Nevertheless, during an attack on Bentin fortress, Chizuru's worst fears come true.
