Sándor Rózsa, the young outlaw, has already been in prison for petty pranks, but after he escapes, he tries to avoid any clash with the authorities. He is on his way home, riding his horse to has native village, seeing many oddities along the way. All able-bodied young boys are deported to war for 16 years, most never return, their families starving. When he encounters gendarmerie abuse in his village, he intervenes but must flee. The poor hail him as their hero.

Sándor Rózsa rides his yellow-haired horse, thinking about the ugly girl he saw in his native village. The girl also can't get Sándor out of her head, but her father has already arranged her to marry the son of a master horseman. Once the father learns what happened in the village, it stuck in his mind that he must meet the mysterious rider. Since Sándor's younger brother works on his land, he plans how they could get in touch through him.

Sándor visits one of his mistresses, where he finds his younger brother in an unambiguous situation. He doesn't make a big deal out of it as his thoughts are still on the ugly girl. He even offers to get his brother a horse to start a decent life with. He teams up with two of his outlaw pals to steal the beautiful stallion he admired on his way to his native village.

Sándor Rózsa happily rides back to the fisherman's hut where he left his brother, bringing him the freshly stolen light bay, but he could not wait longer and walked back to his master's farm. Sándor a bit annoyed, but rides there too, but finds no one at home but their daughter, who is the ugly girl he's been thinking a lot lately. Their first meeting doesn't go completely smoothly.

Sándor Rózsa, in order to pay his accomplices, steals two cattle for both of them. One rogue is on his way home with them, while the other rides off with Sándor to his brother's master to sell them. The farmer welcomes them and tells them that the light bay he stole earlier was the captain-general's horse, and now all persecutors are looking for them. Sándor, leaving his friend behind, rides away hastily.

The corrupt leaders of the city order Péter Veszelka, a former usurer, to steal 12 cattle from a nearby land. Veszelka, knowing no rouge other than Sándor Rózsa, sends his farmer, Sándor's younger brother to talk to him. In order to help his brother advance to the promised position as a wrangler, the outlaw takes the job. Teaming up with three accomplices, he delivers the selected animals for the evening.

The sharing of the money received for the stolen cattle ends in an argument, and Sándor and two of his pals return to the usurer's ranch to clear things up. The conversation turns into drinking and having fun, and when it gets too late, the outlaws stay in the barn for the night. The fourth outlaw, feeling deceived, alerts the gendarmerie, who raid the farm. Sándor breaks out of the surrounded farm, but while one of his companions is injured, the other is captured.

Matyi Pisze believes that he didn't get enough money for the stolen cattle, so he had Sándor's younger brother arrested by the persecutors in revenge. Sándor Rózsa realizes that there is a traitor among them and devises a plan to free his brother from Szeged's dungeon. To get an alibi for the time of the action, he reads a doctor a lesson who has been after him for a long time.

A Royal Commissioner is visiting Szeged for the renewal of office, gendarme supervision intensifies. Due to the sidelining of the evil doctor, special attention is paid to Sándor Rózsa, even his love interest is kept under gendarme supervision. The senator of Szeged takes steps to free the usurer imprisoned with Sándor's younger brother, who hears from an inmate that his brother wants him to be an outlaw like him after his release plan succeeds.

Sándor Rózsa is gathering with his gang to free his younger brother when he receives news that his brother has committed suicide in prison. In deep grief, the shattered rogue disappears, leaving everyone behind. Matyi Pisze, the traitor devises a plan to hand Sándor over to the gendarmes, in exchange for impunity and material possessions. The Captain-General rejoices in the impending success, even though he knows it was not up to them.

Matyi Pisze's plan works, and the persecutors capture them with the stolen cattle. To set an example, they are dragged back to Röszke to show their punishment to the villagers, but the act of intimidation turns into a riot, and the villagers led by Sándor Rózsa turn against them, which result in losses in both sides. Meanwhile, the city is also being purged, prisoners are being executed.

The people of the surrounding villages gather in Szeged for Saint's day. There is also Sándor, looking for Juliska, to whom he tells that he is already a decent man, ha has decided to be an accountant under a pseudonym. Suddenly, a fire breaks out, soon the whole city is on fire, Sándor immediately begins to rescue. The arriving gendarmes recognize him and start chasing him, but he rides away with his love, let Szeged burn, maybe the sins of the city are burn in the fire, too.
