Sándor Rózsa, the young outlaw, has already been in prison for petty pranks, but after he escapes, he tries to avoid any clash with the authorities. He is on his way home, riding his horse to has native village, seeing many oddities along the way. All able-bodied young boys are deported to war for 16 years, most never return, their families starving. When he encounters gendarmerie abuse in his village, he intervenes but must flee. The poor hail him as their hero.
