The journey begins in Selma Lagerlöf's home district in Värmland, Sweden, where the croft grounds are still in the forest and she gets to enjoy the occasional adventure. But when the Värmlanders became too numerous to live on the land, they left their poor homeland and migrated to other places for work. But in the first episode, we first follow Clary's search for the family's roots in Värmland, from the croft and back to the farms they previously owned.

Now the Värmland crofters get permanent work at Tobo mill in Uppland and don't have to emigrate. They build the Tobo carpentry factory and the workers' housing that belonged to it. Clary get a lot of help from Lövsta's village council led by Lars-Gösta Hellberg.

The farming era comes to an end for great-grandfather, who has to leave the farm. But why? The legal shift, the major land reform in the 19th century, led to Clary's great-grandfather being driven into bankruptcy and forced to leave the farm in Gräsbo village in Östervåla. In 1871, the self-employed farmer was forced to change his life and become an industrial worker in Gävle.

"The soldier". A journey in the family's footsteps from farming to suburban life. SVT's Clary Jansson continues to follow her own family's path from the country to the city and thus portrays a Sweden that has been transformed in 150 years. Private Ed was one of the last jacks in the participating army. Of the ten children in the soldier camp, one beautiful daughter became Clary's grandmother. But is she wearing stage clothes in the photo?

The family converges in Gävle, a city seething with industry, growing class struggle and spiritual revival. Relatives emigrate. But the family journey also reaches the goal, Traneberg, the second suburb of Stockholm, where Clary herself was born.
