The brothers Max and Lucio Baratta, notoriously murderous drug dealers, can only be tried if a crucial witness provides evidence. The team tries to manipulate him, promising a deal so he can be reunited with his woman Melony. He wears a wire, but due to technical problems that doesn't provide proof that he's hired for another murder, and the next attempt is compromised by Melony's infidelity and Baratta mistrust.

The redoubted, elusive Riverside Raper left a victim alive and able to testify. The team is charge is take off the case, which goes to King's. A transferred member is unwillingly pressed into 'liason' which she dreads as 'spying'. When a suspect is compellingly linked to several cold cases and confesses, he insist the latest one isn't his work, yet only King feels compelled to go after the presumed copycat.

King breaks every rule in the book, exhausting the captain's patience, to vindictively persecute repeat minor sex offender Seymour Keagan, whom she always failed to nail for serious sexual crimes, partially because his slovenly wife provides fake alibis. The same, offspring-devoted Cora seems unwilling to turn on him even when confronted with his latest foxy younger date. With her mother Eleni Demaris finally recovering, Dawn again makes an impossible pest of herself, exhausting Danny by escaping to engage in 'social' drug abuse and thus shattering even Jessica's confidence concerning parental aspirations 'for now'.

Jeffrey Denmers, the young security guard who found him in the bunny experiment room, was involved in an anti-Muslim incident. However the team finds alternative motives in both the research team and Khan's Iranian family, who arranged a bride while he actually had a gay, adulterous lover.

Meanwhile King's team takes over their fatal shooting investigation, looking for a missing witness trough his kid brother, and finds both a different target and alternative motives.

Their leader Robert Carlson turns out to be an undercover federal detective. Widower Trevor's boy Connor and daughter Scout are placed in their surprisingly well-prepared, estranged maternal grandfather's custody. Danny's upcoming legal procedure keeps causing trouble, as does King's yet undisclosed pregnancy and infidelity with divorced colleague Spears, with only Jessica's labor lawyer sister as mediator.

Wealthy and superstitious race-horse owner Joe Baldwin practices philanthropy because he believes his charity donations bring luck to his ponies. One object of his bounty is gold-digger Jean Jason, about whom he has no illusions, and in order to get rid of her he finances her European vacation, and with her, unknown to Baldwin, goes full-time gigolo/part time artist Paul Vinette. Before a big race Baldwin is at an orphanage near the track and expresses his wishes for rain on the following day as his horse, "Sarcasm", runs best on a muddy track. The orphans resent his wish as it is also to be the day of their annual big outing, as does the orphanage assistant, Betty McKay, who chides Baldwin for his selfish viewpoint. It does rain but "Sarcasm" loses anyway, and Baldwin decides it was because the orphans were pulling against him. He arranges a big party for the kids and he and Betty fall in love. When Jean returns from Europe, she demands $50,000 to fade out of the picture. He tells her he will bring her a check. Paul sees Jean packing her bags, accuses her of running out, and they quarrel. She gets a gun and orders him out of the apartment and they fight for the weapon. Paul is leaving the building as Baldwin enters. A few minutes later, the police receive a call from a man claiming to be Joe Baldwin who says he has just killed Jean Jason. Baldwin is arrested and convicted on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to death. He escapes the police and goes into hiding in the home of a taxicab driver, Frank Bent, he had once befriended. Baldwin, with the aid of Bent and Betty, start the process of proving his innocence and also finding the real killer.
