Running away from the locals, Styopa accidentally falls into a well and ends up in a Cossack village in 1612 during an attack on it by the Crimean Tatars. The teenager is mistaken for a spy and thrown into a pit.

Nazar tries to inflict violence on Styopa, but he is saved by the daughter of the chieftain Alyonka. The chieftain decides to give the teenager for "upbringing" in the family of the Cossack Churila.
