Lt. Frank Dain is called in by a publisher when one his most popular authors goes missing. Dain finds the case increasingly complicated the more involved he gets.
Dain tries to locate and help a new mother with her infant. The two are on the run from her father-in-law who is intending to have the child removed from her care and raise it himself.
Lt. Dain quits the missing persons bureau when he is accused of killing his former girlfriend. Then he starts his own investigation into who actually murdered his old flame.
Lt. Dain is shot and wounded by a runaway at the airport while investigating a case. While in the hospital he falls in love with a fellow patient, unaware the woman is a missing person.
