On its shores, it has villages with houses on stilts inhabited by a tribe named Intha that lives mainly in the lake area. Intha's fishermen steer their boats by wrapping one leg around their oar.

It dates somewhere around 2600 years ago that would make it one of the oldest Buddhist stupa in the entire world.
