Handsome college dropout Tom Allanson's first marriage failed, so he shares custody with ex Florence Hackett and remarries ambitious hedonistic Pat, who persuades him to get into debt to pay her Monticello dream house. Tom's doting grandfather, who sold his house to care for his terminal wife, helps out by contributing the sum and moving into a wing. Tom's impossible to please father however, ruthless Savannah lawyer Walter Allanson, disowns Tom completely, sides with his first wife and openly turns on the couple, even getting Tom fired from his menial job. Shortly after, he's shot in his own cellar by a figure whose profile fits Tom, who has no solid alibi and gets convicted very long after Pat persuades him to turn down a plea for six years.
