In this documentary about this catastrophe, which far eclipses the "Titanic" disaster (1912, 1523 dead), some of the nearly 1,000 survivors describe what were probably the worst hours of their lives as they fought for their lives in the freezing Baltic Sea and had to watch relatives and friends drown or freeze to death. They have never been able to forget the images of that night. Desperate people who shot themselves and their families to escape an agonizing death; others who fought ruthlessly for their place in the lifeboat; but also sailors who became heroes in those hours and selflessly risked their lives for others. For the first time, it has also been possible to interview several crew members of the Russian submarine "S 13" on camera about the events on the night of January 31. According to the latest findings, the sinking of the Gustloff is the worst maritime disaster of all time.
