The clown Bock, main attraction of the Circus Metropol, is found murdered after the evening's show. Bock had recently started publishing his life story in a daily newspaper, heaping scorn on his colleagues and sometimes even exposing career-threatening secrets from their past, so that many wanted to see him gone. Or could the reason for his death be found in Bock's own past, his life as a nobleman which, together with his wife and daughter, he left behind to join the circus? Kommissar Bernard and Inspektor Mireux have more than enough suspects, even without the possibility that a jealous husband or boyfriend might be the killer, as the aging Casanova used his nightly performances to woo young women in the audience.

Maurice Chazal, co-owner of a company producing animated store mannequins, is shot dead in his workshop. Chazal was an unpleasant, greedy man and there is a good chance that it was greed that killed him - though it is up to Kommissar Bernard and Inspektor Janot to find out whether it was his own greed or someone else's. Finding the killer would be so much easier if the only witness to the murder wasn't a dumb redhead secretary - the animated puppet Chazal was working on when he died ...

The police is called in when blood stains and a half-burned jacket are found on a pig farm. But the original theory that pig farmer Antoine Malbosc has killed a man during an argument is proved wrong when Malbosc himself is found murdered in a vat full of pig swill. As his malice and brutality have blighted the lives of all those around him, Kommissar Bernard and Inspektor Janot have more than enough suspects, from Malbosc's abused wife to his illegal Portugese farm hand.
