A felines-focused conservationist runs and lives in a private sanctuary in Kent for big cats in trouble. His latest purring protege is a jaguar cub which the mother can't raise. As with other orphans before, he takes it in his home where wife and daughter admire his unwavering substitute-parental devotion to see to feeding, nurturing - with some assistance from his family and co-workers when he takes it to a fitted shed. When he spots retarded development and suspects a visual defect, he drives early and long to the UK's most specialized vet ward for expert examination.

Giles and his team are delighted to see Maya grow and behave more normally. he tries hydrotherapy, which actually helps the jaguar cub learn how to use her hind legs, significantly improving her mobility. Later he'll find she can actually see. Briny get to mind the fats-growing feline while Giles flies tend days to Costa Rica, visiting a zoologist studying the corridor vital to keep the species gene pool varied, but under threat from a hydro-power lake on top of human incursions.
