Grim Bible-obsessed, terminally ill contractor Karel Huberts confesses the murder 19 years ago, i.e. past the Dutch statute of limitation, of his neighbor boy Mark Scholten (then 17), whom he suspected of 'raping' his actually consenting daughter Marijke, who since refuses all contact with both parents. The skeleton masoned behind a well in the basement of an apartments building Huberts helped construct at the time is identified as Mark's. The victim's surviving brother, restaurateur Hans Scholten, who has a criminal record, rages at the police, including De Cocq, who never acted on his suggestions that Karel did it and maintains the old murderer abused Marijke himself. Shortly after, Karel is butchered like a pig.
