An Introduction to the Co-op
ELFCO TV episode 1: East Lansing Food Co-op General Manager David Finet discusses the value of food co-ops as a local alternative to the business as usual attitude prevalent in today's food industry. The theory behind co-ops, supporting local growers/producers, and community projects are all covered in this introductory primer to what a food co-op is, and how the East Lansing Food Cooperative is working toward providing the Greater Lansing Area with sustainable food alternatives.

Viewers are invited to learn more about the differences that exist between cooperative and standard corporate business models, and GM Dave Finet explains the importance of "one share, one vote".

Mobile Food Trucks 'The Slow Fast Food'
ELFCO TV episode 2: In part 1, take a closer look at how local mobile food trucks are offering Lansing (MI) a delicious alternative to the fast food restaurants that dot the American landscape. El Oasis, Purple Carrot, and Trailer Park'd each share their philosophies on why it's important to work with local growers, and the state of the food industry today.

In part two, we wrap up the food truck interviews, and visit a couple of the local growers that help to supply them with fresh, in-season, locally grown food. Among the topics discussed, local growers talk about how and why they got started producing all natural products, and how this practice benefits community, environment, and the world.

Farmers Markets and the People That Make Them Possible
ELFCO TV episode 3: In part one, visit the Allen Neighborhood Center in an effort to learn more about what goes into the creation and operation of a farmers market. Along the way we visit Urbandale, Lansing's first urban farm project. Later we talk with Steve Grose, owner of Green Eagle Farm about how he got started farming, and the value of farmers markets in the community.

In part two, we continue conversations with Hollie Hamel of the ANC, and look in on the Sparrow Mini-Market - a small farm market that takes place twice a month inside Sparrow hospital! Afterward, we visit the Allen Street Farmers Market to give you a first hand look at an exciting, and relatively young urban farm market here in the Lansing area.

Raw Benefits
ELFCO TV episode 4: In this episode we explore the subject of raw food, and learn more about the benefits it can have when added into the diet. We talk with Cricket Lott, the founder of Lansing's Raw Food Meet-up group about the role that raw food has played in her life, and we show you how easy it is to make fresh, raw juice in your own kitchen. We're also pleased to have the opportunity this month to include excerpts from the documentary "Food Matters."

Organic Agriculture Today
ELFCO TV episode 5: In this episode we meet with Michigan State University's Dr. Phil Howard to learn more about the history of organics, and to better understand how the organic food industry has evolved to become what it is today. We also talk with Taylor Reid, a founding member of the MSU Student Organic Farm about his thoughts on organics today. Later, in part two, sit back and enjoy a visit to Owosso Organics, where we talk with Pooh Stevenson and Richard Bowie about the challenges and joys related to life as small-scale organic farmers.

Food Origins: Growing Farmers
ELFCO TV episode 6: Learn more about how the region where a food is produced is integral to the health and growth of local communities. Michigan State University's Dr. Jim Bingen discusses his research involving "place named organics," and explains why this is something to be celebrated.

We continue the conversation with Taylor Reid, and we ask the creator and founder of beginning farmers.org what it means to "grow farmers." Along the way, Taylor tells us his story, and explains how and why he got involved with helping first generation farmers to get started in a profession that has become increasingly more difficult to gain a foothold in.

Why Co-ops?

Farm to School
ELFCO TV episode 15: Part 1: "Providing Schools with Fresh Veggies". We visit Duane Morelan at Veges from the Ledges, and learn how he got involved with the Farm to School program. Later, follow Duane as he makes a delivery to Olivet High school.

Part 2: "From Farm, to Kitchen, to Plate". Meet Karla Love, the Food Service Supervisor at Olivet High school, and learn more about how Olivet, with the help of the Farm to School program, is on the cutting edge of reshaping the nutritive value of school lunches. See what the kids themselves have to say about the lunches, and later, hear from Colleen Matts, MSU's Farm to Institution Specialist.

Part 3: "A Conversation with Marla Moss". In part 3, Colleen Matts interviews Marla Moss of the Michigan Department of Education, and asks her to explain not only how the Farm to School program works, but what she as the Assistant Director of Child Nutrition envisions for the future of the program.
