Charismatic burglar Maksim gets into trouble after owing money to dangerous bandits. During the next robbery, he witnesses a desperate act committed by the apartment owner Eva, who has unexpectedly returned: she tries to burn everything that reminds her of her traitorous boyfriend, and in addition, commit suicide. Maksim decides to stop Eva and save himself from even bigger problems.

In 1919, demobbed Gerald Brenan rents a house for a year in Yegen, a village in Alpujarra. He has little but a love of reading and writing.
