When vagabond Silo is seriously stabbed he is nursed by Maria in her village. They are attracted to each other, but Maria is married. Then her husband Alexander is found dead in the river, and Silo is suspected of murder.

Everyone likes Silo the tramp (Attila Hörbiger). He's sincere, faithful, and clever, but nothing can keep him in one place for long. One day, something terrible happens. Someone wants to stab Silo and almost succeeds, but some fishermen find him and bring him back to the village, where young Maria (Heidemarie Hatheyer) nurses him, and he falls in love with her.
