Summaries

A Jewish mother in New York finds herself at odds with her son's new wife, a pretty Gentile girl.

Mrs. Esther Meyers, a wealthy widow who bestows every care on her two sons, Robert and Harry, is disappointed when Robert elopes with Aida, a society girl who has a frivolous and socially ambitious mother. To satisfy her son and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Meyers moves from her modest home to a fashionable residence in New York's West Side. Harry, to meet debts, misappropriates funds from the bank where he is employed; Mrs. Meyers persuades him to confess and then appeals to Robert, destined for district attorneyship, who in turn accuses Harry of jeopardizing his (Robert's) future. After selling her jewels to make good the loss, Mrs. Meyers castigates Robert, Aida, and her mother and returns with Harry to her old home. Later, she is visited by the repentant wife and her mother, who are forced to remain through a quarantine imposed because of a smallpox epidemic; Aida becomes gradually domesticated and an inseparable friend of her mother-in-law.—AFI
