Japan conquers China just before WW2 starts. Chinese women are captured and placed in concentration camps, where they are tortured and humiliated. Some try to escape incurring enormous risks, and death if they fail.

Kang-hie attempts to escape from prison with Cheon-ja but fails. This results in her being transferred to a new facility. Looking for an escuse to kill his rebellious charges, the warden offers Kang-hie the chance to escape--planning to shoot her as she leaves, but Kang-hie refuses the offer. He then attempts to drown her but fails. A desperate Kang-hie makes contact with someone on the outside who seems genuinely interested in helping her.—Anonymous
