Ozgur is a young woman who is the daughter of a refugee family fled to France. She is born and raised in Paris. After her father Huseyin's death, she comes to Istanbul to fulfill Huseyin's last wish. He wanted to be buried in his own country. But because of September 12 military coup d'etat period, Huseyin is no more a Turkish citizen.
Özgür is the daughter of parents who, following the revolutionary struggle, took refuge in France after the coup detat of 1980. She was born and raised in Paris, having never visited Turkey. Her mother passed away when she was a child and Özgür is raised by her father.Özgür is a young woman who is seriously disconnected from life, a stranger to everything but mostly to herself. The story begins with the death of Hüseyin, Özgürs father, in Paris. A letter Hüseyin deeply effects her. She comes to stanbul with her fathers body.
In Istanbul, she finds out that in order to bury her father, who is not a Turkish citizen afterthe coup, she should overcome almost impossible bureaucratic problems. These problems will forceÖzgür into a journey to Turkish bureaucracy, stanbul and herself.
Firstly, she makes contact with her mothers relatives for help. They are open-minded anad humblepeople, who helped revolutionaries before the coup. However, they cannot help Özgür no matter howmuch they wish. Through these people in the slums, Özgür meets a young man named Ferhat who isalso a member of the same lost generation created by the coup. Ferhat is deeply impressed by Özgürsstory. He wants to help. She starts to come close with Ferhat a relation begins to form.
Özgür strives to find all ways possible. However, they all prove to be unsuccessful. Eventually shegives up on burying her father in Turkey. Ferhat, though, doesnt let her give up. There is at leastone more way: addressing to her fathers relatives.
At first, Özgür does not want to ask for help from those people whom she does not know at all and whohave no relations with her father; but it is a last resort and she accepts.
The day Özgür and Ferhat visit her fathers relatives is the day when her uncle is having a grandreligious circumcision ceremony for all his grandsons.
However, there is one more surprise waiting for Özgür; her half-mad grandmother has protected her fathers house as it was when he fleed in 1980.
After this, things develops in an unexpected way for both of them.
