Summaries

Our story concerns the lives of an outwardly happy suburban couple, who through desire for money and thrills, become involved in the play for pay racket. Awakened at six in the morning, Dan Davis is confronted with two police officers who tell him that his wife, Pat, has been hit and killed by a truck. Through flashbacks he then begins to realize that his wife was not on her night job as a nurse, as she had said but was in fact working as a prostitute in a motel. In the beginning she had been drinking in a bar, despondent over losing her money at the track. She was approached by Tony, who convinced her that his motel just outside of town was the best way of making easy money. After meeting other girls there in various stages of undress, she witnesses several intimate affairs, and eventually submits to Tony at her initiation. A month later, one of her customers turns out to be a neighbour of hers and Dan's, who later admits that he told his wife about their contact. Pat realizes that she is about to be exposed, so she tells Tony that she is quitting. They struggle but Pat breaks away, runs outside where she is fatally struck by the truck.
